Sainz wins 5th stage and consolidates leadership in cars

Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Mini) today won the fifth of 12 stages of the all-terrain Dakar Rally between Al-ula and Hail in Saudi Arabia and consolidated his leadership in the car category.

The Spaniard spent 3: 52.01 hours to complete the 353 kilometers from the one-stage selective sector that had a total of 564 kilometers, leaving Qatari Nasser AL-Attiyah (Toyota) in second position, 2.56 minutes away.

Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini), sailed by Portuguese Paulo Fiúza, finished third, 6.11 behind his team-mate, and was late in the fight for victory.

Sainz is now 5.59 minutes ahead of second-placed Al-Attiyah with Peterhansel and Fiúza third at 17.53.

On Friday, the sixth stage of the Dakar will take place between Hail and Riyadh, with 830 kilometers, 477 of them timed before the rest day on Saturday.
