Ryuichi Sakamoto is one of the most acclaimed composers on the international scene. A year after his passing, his music continues to be celebrated and to inspire audiences of all generations, achieving a consensus of rare breadth.
From melodic refinement to captivating minimalism, Sakamoto’s work evokes an eclectic range of influences, from traditional Japanese music to the works of classical composers like Bach, Debussy, and Schumann.
The iconic soundtracks he created for films such as The Last Emperor, Babel, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, and The Wind Rises were compiled, in 1996, in the recording work 1996 – for piano, violin, and cello – presented in two world tours that decisively consolidated the mythical status of this musician and composer.
In this tribute concert to Sakamoto, we present a selection of works from the album 1996, performed according to the original scores, available in a limited and rare edition, supervised and revised by the author himself. The piano, violin, and cello trio created by pianist and composer João Vasco is currently one of the few ensembles in the world to present the work 1996 in concert.
João Vasco is the author of the album and concert 2016, presented in countries across four continents since 2019, in which he pays homage to Sakamoto, having created musical works inspired by the musical universe of this composer, specifically from the album 1996.
For this concert, we selected ten works from 1996 and four works from 2016, and, similar to Sakamoto’s performances, all the music will be accompanied by video artworks, conceived for this project by pianist João Vasco, who is also an award-winning photographer and videomaker.
This concert is part of a joint MAC/CCB and Performing Arts programme within the framework of the permanent exhibition “Object, Body and Space: Revising artistic genres since the 1960s.”
The following day, November 9, this same exhibition will have guided tours throughout the day, with musical interventions at different moments. This joint programming MAC/CCB and Performing Arts can be consulted in more detail here.
