In 2023, Super Bock Super Rock is back in Meco for another three days of music celebration.
The possibility of camping and the beach right next door are two good reasons to book the 13th, 14th and 15th of July now, but the main reason continues to be the Music, as the new confirmations for the 27th edition prove, increasingly marked by originality and authenticity: the very special concert by the Portuguese Sam The Kid with Orelha Negra and Orquestra and three female confirmations, the American singer 070 Shake and the revelations PinkPantheress and Biig Piig.
SAM THE KID WITH ORCHESTRA AND ORELHA NEGRA
Sam The Kid has long been synonymous with the best hip-hop in Portuguese, one of the strongest symbols that this culture has generated among us. Albums like “Sobretudo”, “Beats Vol. 1: Amor” or “Pratica(mente)” are classics of all Portuguese music. The rapper grew up in Chelas and soon fell in love with hip-hop culture, still in the 90s. With an irreproachable work ethic, Samuel Mira released his second album in 2002: “Sobre(tudo)”. In the same year Sam The Kid also releases an album with only instrumentals. “Beats Vol 1: Amor”, a record based on the parent’s love story, would mark the history of Portuguese hip-hop for its originality and raise the bar of the genre here. In 2006 came “Pratica(mente)”, the rapper’s third album and a true event. Songs such as “Poetas de Karaoke” and “À Procura da Perfeita Repetição” mark the imagination of thousands of hip-hop fans in Portugal. But Sam The Kid did not rest in the shadow of his own success, never stopping producing, with dozens of collaborations and still all the success with the band Orelha Negra. And it is precise with Orelha Negra that he performs at this year’s edition of Super Bock Super Rock, in a very special concert. In addition to being accompanied by his usual band (Fred Ferreira, Francisco Rebelo, João Gomes, and DJ Cruzfader), Sam The Kid will also have a 24-piece orchestra by his side, led by maestro Pedro Moreira. It will certainly be one of the most anticipated moments of this year’s edition of the Festival, scheduled for July 14th, on the Super Bock Stage.
PINKPANTHERESS
PinkPantheress is one of the strongest names in new English music. Born in Bath in 2001, music has always been in his life. He started singing in a My Chemical Romance cover band as a teenager and cites names like Paramore, Lily Allen, Imogen Heap, and K-pop, among others, as his first and main influences. It didn’t take long for the young woman to start producing instrumentals for a friend and testing her first songs. Some of these records were published on social media at the end of 2020 and their first songs went viral in 2021. A mix of UK garage, drum N bass, pop, alternative rock, and electronica, among other genres, makes PinkPantheress’s music is difficult to catalog but, at the same time, very distinctive. In addition to sound, PinkPantheress’ art is also made of words, in a stream of consciousness that seems to be fed by the beats and that does not dispense with irony in the speech. Singles like “Passion,” “Pain” or “Break It Off” went viral and exploded on streaming platforms, with millions of listens. These themes are included in the mixtape “To Hell with It”, released in 2021. In recent times PinkPantheress has released singles with names like Mura Masa, Lil Uzi Vert, Shygirl (“bbycakes”), Willow (“Where You Are”) or Sam Gellaitry (“Picture in My Mind”). Earlier this year she edited “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2” with Ice Spice and the theme already has millions of views on YouTube, promising to be one of the hits of the year. For all this, PinkPantheress is, without a doubt, one of the names of the moment and will be visiting Portugal on July 15th on Stage 2 of another edition of Super Bock Super Rock.
070 SHAKE
070 Shake is one of the most original voices in contemporary hip-hop. As a teenager, he revealed himself with the theme “Trust Nobody”, then joined Kanye West’s GOOD Music label. In addition, throughout these years, 070 Shake also stood out for their participation in albums such as “Ye” by Kanye West himself (in the themes “Ghost Town” and “Violent Crimes”), “Daytona” by Pusha T and “Nasir ” by Nas. In 2016, 070 Shake played the first part of several concerts by The 1975, an experience that gave him the opportunity to expand his audience and tests new solutions live. Her stage name comes from her association with the collective 070, with whom she edited her first mixtape: “The 070 Project: Chapter 1”. His solo debut, however, would arrive in 2018 with the EP “Glitter”. This record caught the attention of the public and the critics for the frank way in which 070 Shake spoke of her problems, in a catharsis at the service of each of those six songs. In interviews, 070 Shake has mentioned a number of influences ranging from Michael Jackson to Lauryn Hill, passing through Paramore or My Chemical Romance. In 2020 she edited her first album. “Modus Vivendi” has an impeccable production and is marked by a futuristic flavor, between R&B and electropop. In 2022 he released his second album. “You Can’t Kill Me Because I Don’t Exist” keeps the bar high thanks to songs like “Lose My Cool” (feat. NLE Choppa) or “Skin and Bones”. 070 Shake performs at Meco on July 13th, on Stage 2 of Super Bock Super Rock.
BIIG PIIG
Jessica Smyth, known as Biig Piig, is a young Irish singer and songwriter who has conquered listeners all over the world thanks to her engaging voice and her confessional style in two languages (English and Spanish), over a series of rhythms that go through the hip-hop, R&B, dance music, and neo-soul. Jessica was born in Ireland but spent several years of her life in Spain before moving with her family to London. All of these experiences contribute to a global artistic personality, attuned to a range of very different influences. Despite changes and circumstances, her ability to find moments of calm and clarity has always been a constant. In her teens she started making her first songs as a ukelele and, at just 17 years old, she was already involved with the collective NiNE8. Her first song with more prominence was “Vice City”, a somewhat jazzy and atmospheric theme on which Biig Piig showed her voice, between moments of rap and other sung. In 2018 she released the EP “Big Fan of the Sesh, Vol. 1” and the following year her second EP: “A World Without Snooze, Vol. 2”. The third EP, “No Place for Patience, Vol. 3”, was released on the RCA Records label. In 2020 she edited several singles and in 2021 another EP: “The Sky Is Bleeding”. In this record, Biig Piig seems to approach a more pop language, without ever ceasing to take risks and want to do something different. After releasing singles like “FUN”, “Kerosene” or “This Is What They Mean” in 2022, Biig Piig proves that he maintains his inspiration with the mixtape “Bubblegum”, released in 2023. With these new songs in his luggage, the original voice of Bii Piig performs in Portugal, on July 15th on Stage 2 of Super Bock Super Rock.
