Acclaimed British singer-songwriter Sam Tompkins has just released the new single “phones in heaven” and announced his long-awaited debut album hi, my name is insecure, scheduled for release on May 24, 2024.
hi, my name is insecure is the culmination of several years of hard work, incorporating songs that are already fan favourites alongside new and exciting material. The album, which will be released on May 24, sees the collaboration between Sam and songwriter Pablo Bowman (Calvin Harris, James Arthur, Jonas Brothers) and songwriter and producer Danny Casio (Little Mix, Joy Crookes, Tom Grennan, Rudimental). The album includes the hit songs “someone else”, “time will fly”, “see me”, “lose it all” and the new single “phones in heaven”. Sam’s 2022 EP Who Do You Pray To? entered the top 10 of the UK album sales chart and has since been hailed by GQ as “one of the UK’s most exciting vocal talents right now ” and CLASH as “the man of the moment”. His artistry and creative vision continue to grow.
The album title, hi, my name is insecure, addresses the more introverted side of Sam, who explains: “I really like being in the company of my friends, but if they take me out of my comfort zone, and I have to go to a party or event or whatever, I just go inside myself and find any excuse to get out of that event.”
The new single, “phones in heaven,” is a brutally honest portrait of the pain and confusion of missing someone. Sam says of the single: “When I originally wrote ‘phones in heaven’, my true intention was to write a song for young people, especially those who have lost a friend too soon. As I’ve gotten older and met more people, most people I know have, at some point, lost someone they loved prematurely to illness, suicide, or other things; me included. This song comes from a place where we want to enjoy life and move forward, but in many cases, because we haven’t been able to close that chapter in life, we feel like we can’t. We honestly thought that maybe just a phone call from this person would bring us peace, but unfortunately, life doesn’t always work out that way. When I lost my father to suicide in November last year, this song sounded even more powerful, so it felt like the most appropriate way to enter 2024. To show others that they are not alone in their struggles and that we can all overcome these problems if we just start a conversation.”
Each Sam Tompkins song is a symphony of feelings and his most recent release, “someone else”, perfectly sums up his ability to relate to people. Sam’s raw vocal talent moves the soul and takes the listener through the stories of each song, from whispers to storms of emotion fundamental to his unique sound. This sound is encapsulated in “lose it all”, which deeply relates to its fans; the live version on YouTube currently has 2.1 million views and her song performance on IG is her most viewed post to date (11 million views). His heartfelt lyrics about all aspects of life resonate directly with fans, and his ability to delve into issues that are difficult to put into words makes them feel truly heard and understood. The dedication and love of their fans are evident in the success of their previous single, “time will fly”, which garnered more than 2.3 million streams on Spotify and more than 500 thousand views of the official video on YouTube.
