The single “You Stepped Out Of A Dream” is now available on digital platforms. Grammy award-winning jazz singer Samara Joy has announced a new studio album, Portrait, set for release on October 11th.
Having emerged after an intense world tour, in this new album, Samara Joy channels all the success achieved in the search for musical exploration. Portrait, the follow-up to her 2022 album Linger Awhile, is a portrait of the 24-year-old Bronx native’s growth not only as a once-in-a-generation singer but also as a songwriter, arranger and bandleader.
Co-produced by Joy and veteran, multi-Grammy-winning trumpeter Brian Lynch, the album is comprised of 8 songs and features an intimate and moving chemistry that the artist developed with her touring band, an egalitarian octet consisting of trumpeter Jason Charos, the trombonist Donavan Austin, saxophonists David Mason and Kendric McCallister, pianist Connor Rohrer, bassist Felix Moseholm and drummer Evan Sherman. Joy’s role in the ensemble is multifaceted, balancing her prominence as a vocalist with her contributions as a musical collaborator. “I’m often the fifth voice, the fifth horn,” he explains. “I hope listeners see that I’m also a musician.”
The album was recorded in simple sessions — just two or three takes of each song — in one of the most renowned places in jazz, the Van Gelder Studio. Portrait highlights Joy’s prowess as a lyricist, with new arrangements that blend her lyrics with songs by Charles Mingus, Sun Ra, and others. The album also features vibrant interpretations of standards, including new arrangements for “You Stepped Out of a Dream” (available now) and “Autumn Nocturne.” The lineup ultimately proves that the vocal-jazz repertoire can still break new ground while referencing jazz history.
Through Portrait, Joy not only pays homage to her jazz idols but also embraces her rich musical heritage and diverse influences. The album is a testament to her growth and the deep connection within her band — a group the singer hopes will continue to evolve together in the years to come.
“A well of inspiration that never dries up due to the different currents that flow, constantly flowing into the main source. That’s what comes to mind when I think about this project and the musicians who created it with me,” says Joy about the project. “Eight musicians, eight new musical perspectives and backgrounds – all united in a context designed for growth and exploration. Due to the incredible depth of musicianship and creativity fused into this band’s sound, I feel honoured to be able to present ‘Portrait’, an album made after a year of development and revision on the road.”
