SandSpace, an application that allows you to indicate and know the levels of occupation of the sand on 685 sea and river beaches across the country, has just won the Audience Award at Apps for Good UK, one of the largest worldwide application competitions.
The only Portuguese application created by young people finalizing in the Apps for Good UK competition, the technological educational program that challenges students and teachers to develop applications to solve social problems, which this year was entirely online and which received the applications created this year in all countries for the first time, thus becoming the world’s largest application competition.
Out of a total of 15 finalist teams, distributed across 5 categories, SandSpace was competing in the ‘Founders & Leaders’ category.
Created by students Bruno Dylan, Diogo Resende, Jorge Correia and Nuno Castro from São João da Madeira, SandSpace came up with the application of the Apps for Good program in Portugal and in the current context of the Covid-19 pandemic allowing users of 685 national beaches indicate and know the updated levels of occupation of the sand, and that already has the partnership of the Portuguese Environment Agency.
Available for download on the Google Play Store, the SandSpace map covers the entire continental coast and that of the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira.
It is the users of each bathing space who provide the app with data on their human occupation, so that the software converts them into a graphic indicator in which green means little density, yellow indicates an already considerable number of bathers and red indicates a limit capacity.
