Santa Casa Alfama ’23 – Complete Program

Presentation at Hotel Memmo Alfama

The complete program of the Santa Casa Alfama Festival.

The Santa Casa Stage poster is complete with the performances of:
SARA CORREIA, MIGUEL MOURA and TERESA SALGUEIRO

The Santa Casa Alfama festival is back for another unmissable edition. On the 29th and 30th of September, this event celebrates the encounter of a country with its own music. For two days the Portuguese song springs from the streets of Lisbon and the people are there to hear it. The alleys of Alfama make up the landscape that intertwines with the voices, the trill of the guitar, and the poetry that is released in the streets… And the various stages spread throughout the Lisbon neighborhood are living proof that fado can be many things simultaneously, without ever ceasing to be Portuguese. After the confirmations of names like Camané, Beatriz Felício, and Geadas, or the great Homage to Hermínia Silva, it’s time to complete the program with the names of Sara Correia, Teresa Salgueiro, and Miguel Moura on the Santa Casa Stage and a series of other unmissable proposals in the programming of spaces such as the Ermelinda Freitas Stage, at the Rooftop Cruise Terminal in Lisbon, the Amália Stage, at the Abreu Advogados Auditorium, the Bogani Stage, at the Sportivo Adicense Group, the Santa Maria Maior Stage, at Largo Chafariz de Dentro, the Santa Casa Futuro Stage, at Sociedade Boa União, and also the new stage installed at the Memmo Hotel Alfama.

PALCO SANTA CASA

SARA CORREIA

Since a very early age, Sara Correia has been a regular presence in the best fado houses in the city of Lisbon. She has lived fado since she was a child. The fact that she grew up in a fado family helped her to live surrounded by music and musicians from an early age, and to live that life in a very natural way. Therefore, she sings with the aptitude and strength of someone who grew up in Fado. Sara Correia was only 13 years old when she was crowned winner of the Grande Noite do Fado and, soon after, she was invited to sing in one of the most mythical fado houses in the city, Casa de Linhares. There, she had the privilege of singing and learning alongside great names in fado, namely Celeste Rodrigues, Jorge Fernando, and Maria da Nazaré, among others. “Sara Correia”, the first album released under the Universal Music Portugal label, was created in partnership with producer Diogo Clemente. In Portugal, critics celebrated Sara Correia’s debut and unanimously applauded the one they called the “great voice of a new generation”. Diogo Clemente. In addition to the melodies of traditional fado, the album features compositions by Joana Espadinha, Carolina Deslandes, Luísa Sobral, António Zambujo, Jorge Cruz, and the aforementioned Diogo Clemente. In 2021 the album won one of the PLAY – Portuguese Music Awards, in the “Best Fado Album” category. However, that year would invariably be marked by the nomination of Sara Correia for the most important world music award, the Latin Grammy. In 2022 she edited “Quero é Viver”, an original by António Variações from 1983. The song hits the digital tops and trends on YouTube during its release week. Fado is intrinsic to it and living it achieves this rare feat of holding us to the ground while at the same time making us rise. And that’s what will happen again on the Santa Casa Stage, on September 30th.

MIGUEL MOURA

Miguel Moura is one of the most promising names in Portuguese music. The Alentejo runs in his blood. Moura was born, raised, and lived. Grandma Adelaide’s house was his haven and it was there that he fell in love with music. At the age of 14, the voice of the fado singer Mariza reached his ear. Under the arch of the stairs at his grandmother’s house, he sang the song “O people from my land” for the first time. hand in hand with music and his land, destiny takes him to the VI Gala de Moura. There he sang the Alentejo fashion “Summer” and, broadcast on digital platforms, the young artist had more than 430,000 views. The expectation surrounding his voice grew over the years and in 2023 the first album finally appears. “Quem Sou Eu” aims to be a journey through the roots of Miguel Moura, for his transformation as a man and for the “sacrifices” made by the dream of singing, as, in fact, portrays his single “Tenho de Abalar.” This album, which has fado but also a bit of light pop music, includes themes already known to the public with “Amor Maior”, “Andei Sozinho”, “Nossa Senhora do Carmo” and even a version of the theme “Para os Braços da Minha Mãe” by Pedro Abrunhosa. Some of these themes will be heard on September 30th, at Palco Santa Casa.

TERESA SALGUEIRO

Teresa Salgueiro was always on the move. Since she took the stage for the first time in 1987, aged just 18, she has never failed to perform in the most prestigious concert halls in the world. First as a founding member of Madredeus, with three million albums sold, and in the last 15 also in his own name. During this journey, albums such as “O Mistério”, “La Golondrina y el Horizonte” (dedicated to traditional Latin American music), and “O Horizonte” stand out, the latter being unanimously awarded the José Afonso Prize. Whether as an actress, famously in the film “Lisbon Story” by Wim Wenders, or as the lead soloist in the orchestral “Silence, Night and Dreams” by Zbigniew Preisner, her enormous talent has allowed her to collaborate with several names in the most varied forms of music. artistic expression: from Caetano Veloso to Coba, from Patrick Watson to José Carreras, from Mário Lúcio to Carlos Paredes or Lucio Dalla… Willow tree. From theaters to studios, from writing lyrics to authoring songs, from designing shows to producing her own records, her discreet charisma, her singing, and her unmistakable voice conquered all those who shared (and share) the journey with her. since 35 years ago. And in 2023 we are invited to meet one of the most historic artists in Portuguese music. At the Santa Casa Alfama festival, a show celebrating a life dedicated to music is expected, with unpublished arrangements for songs that mark her career while also projecting her into the future. This is a moment in time when time stops to hear Teresa Salgueiro sing – on September 30th, at Palco Santa Casa.
The Santa Casa Alfama festival is also an authentic experience, in tune with the soul and beauty of the city. And this is very evident on the stage installed at the Rooftop Cruise Terminal in Lisbon. With a privileged view over the city, the Ermelinda Freitas Stage proposes Fado at sunset and is already one of the public’s favorites. In this year’s edition, on the first day of the festival, September 29, the proposal is to recreate the atmosphere of a fado house, in this case, the mythical “Mesa de Frades”. More than a restaurant, this is an iconic space on the ‘fado route’. This old chapel is full of tiles from the 17th century. XVIII, fado happens every night with fado singers of the new generation and consecrated fado voices. At the Lisbon Cruise Terminal Rooftop, the idea is to recreate this environment in the middle of the festival and, for this, host Pedro de Castro invites the voices of Tânia Oleiro, Rodrigo Rebelo de Andrade, and Ana Sofia Varela for an unforgettable late afternoon. On the second day of the festival, the 30th, it is the public’s turn to be invited to be “Em Casa d`Amália”. In 2019 José Gonçalez created a project that returned to Amália’s house on Rua de São Bento the Tertullian environment so famous during the life of the greatest Portuguese artist of all time. Over the decades Amália Rodrigues hosted many gatherings in her home where, without any kind of aesthetic, ideological, political, or other censorship, everyone could fit in, everyone had a place. In 2020, the project came to life in the program “Em Casa d` Amália”, where, over several seasons, José Gonçalez invited artists from all arts and from all areas, departing from fado to endless nights of music and conversation. The project once again leaves the studio for the Ermelinda Freitas stage, on the Rooftop of the Lisbon Cruise Terminal. This time, host José Gonçalez receives a group of musicians and fado singers who need no introduction: Raquel Tavares, Ângelo Freire, Flávio Jr., Jorge Fernando, and Vânia Duarte promise to create another series of remarkable memories for the festival’s audience.
The Amália Stage, at the Abreu Advogados Auditorium, proves that fado is a genre that is still very much alive today, with voices that guarantee the present and future of our music, which is always rich and diverse. On the 29th, this stage receives the voices of Mário Lundum and Soraia Cardoso. The young woman found the roots of her voice in Fado and has been following a journey in dialogue with her references. As for Mário Lundum, he always made a difference in the field of music. And that’s what he also did on his last album, “Imateral”, released in 2021. On the 30th, the fado will be in charge of Francisco Moreira and Carmo Moniz Pereira. The young fado singer will take to the stage some songs from the album “Todos os Fados são Meus”, released in 2020; Carmo Moniz Pereira promises to win over the audience at Amália Stage with her classical voice rooted in tradition.
In this great fado festival, music and space cannot be separated. And it is from this union that the most exciting moments for the public arise. In this sense, groups and collectivities are also invited to participate in this great celebration. Proof of this is the Bogani Stage, installed at Grupo Sportivo Adicense. On the 29th, the public is invited to hear the voices of José Leal and Mel; on the 30th, it is the turn of João Caldeira and Sandra Correia to win the applause of the public present at Santa Casa Alfama.
On the Santa Maria Maior Stage, the great talents of a parish that lives fado every day of the year parade. These voices, linked to the most typical neighborhoods of Lisbon, such as Alfama, of course, are genuine, popular, and capable of captivating any audience. At Largo do Chafariz de Dentro, fadistas come in pairs: on the 29th, Sónia Santos and Jaime Dias open the way for Ricardo Mesquita and Ana Marta; and on the 30th, the young Inês Pereira and Luís Capão precede the performances of Beatriz Felizardo and Vítor Miranda. Here there will be no lack of tradition and also a lot of heart.
In Fado, the connection to the past has always been an impulse for the future and renewal. These are the fados on the Fado Museum Stage, where the voices of Francisco Salvação Barreto, and Cristina Clara, on the 29th, and Matilde Cid and Ricardo Luís, on the 30th, pay tribute to the memory of Fado, with the creative and renewing energy that has always characterized this musical genre. In the most intimate register of traditional fado or through musical dialogue with other sounds, here we rediscover that Fado and Portuguese music can open up to the world, without losing authenticity.
In addition to renowned fadistas, the festival also has space for younger people and even amateurs, as evidenced by the Santa Casa Futuro Stage, installed at Sociedade Boa União. On the Santa Casa Futuro Stage, we get to know some of the main promises of fado, voices that guarantee the future of our music. On the first day, September 29, the Alverca School of Amateur and Creative Fado is in charge of the program. Founded in 2002, E.F.A.C.A. started from the idea of fado singer Alice Nunes, after realizing the need to create a space where young fado singers and musicians could develop their talents, accompanied by professionals who have been in the fado scene for many years. And some of these young fado singers now perform on the Santa Casa Futuro stage on the 29th. On the second day of the festival, the 30th, the fado proposals that pass through Sociedade Boa União are the responsibility of the Associação Fado Cale Coimbra. A reference in the community in which it operates, this association serves as support and support for fado lovers, listeners, and practitioners, promoting and guiding the possibility of experimentation and materialization of ideas and creations. At Santa Casa Alfama, Associação Fado Cale Coimbra presents the promising voices of Flávia Pereira, Lara Rodrigues, and Leonel Barata, accompanied by musicians Sebastião Pereira (Portuguese guitar), Rui Marques (fado viola) and Diogo Pinto (bass guitar).
In each edition of the biggest Fado Festival in the world, there is always room for news and surprises. And, this year, there is another stage that promises to conquer the public. Installed in the Hotel Memmo Alfama, this stage promises to offer a beautiful fado program in a space that stands out for the class and charm it conveys to visitors. And perfectly in tune with this atmosphere are the voices of José da Câmara, Gustavo Pinto Basto, and Teresa Brum, the fado singers who will kick off the history of Palco Memmo Hotel Alfama.
Another novelty this year is the partnership with the Association of Merchants of the Alfama Neighborhood. The Festival will now include eight Fado houses in Alfama, over the two days, and will have a musical program, in the afternoons, on the Santa Maria Maior Stage. The fado singers Jéssica Crispim, Joana Amendoeira, and Henriqueta Batista are some of the names that will be there.

The now traditional Fado à Janela also returns to Largo de São Miguel to fill the streets and alleys of Alfama with Fado. Jorge Silva, Miguel Monteiro, and José Manuel Rodrigues will have in their hands a Portuguese guitar, a viola, and a bass, respectively.
