São Brás de Alportel starts pilot project PAYT

The Municipality of São Brás de Alportel takes another innovative step in the area of the environment with the implementation of the new pilot project PAYT (Pay as You Throw) “Pay only for the waste it produces”, which starts this September in some urbanizations the village.

The first phase of the project, which will allow the analysis and assessment of the tariff currently in force for the disposal of urban waste, will cover the Fonte da Pedra Urbanization, the Xanabus Urbanization and neighboring buildings and Rua Virgínia de Passos, totaling 156 consumers.

Each consumer / household will have an access and identification key that allows unlocking the lids of the containers intended for the deposition of undifferentiated urban waste and the ecopoints where the waste will be deposited. This process will make it possible to assess the amount of waste deposited by an access key.

As the urban waste tariff is only applied to undifferentiated waste, the more and better the consumer separates, the lower the tariff to be paid by residents for waste, thus fulfilling the polluter pays principle.

The project is the result of an application submitted by the Municipality to the Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources from the Cohesion Fund, which was approved and supported by 85%. The project has a total investment of 170,459.65 euros.

A pedagogical project with environmental concerns and which meets the Municipality’s strategy for the environment and which is expected to be extended soon to other areas and locations in the municipality.
