One of the most charming festivals of the Portuguese summer is back for another series of unforgettable nights in Oeiras.
Festival Jardins do Marquês – Oeiras Valley once again makes a difference through excellent music, as the program shows, now even richer with confirmations for the night of June 28th. Tonight the festival will celebrate two musical genres that are World Heritage: fado and flamenco. The fado singer Sara Correia will take the stage of the Festival with the first part in charge of Flamenco Passion Show.
SARA CORREIA
Since a very early age, Sara Correia has been a regular presence in the best fado houses in the city of Lisbon. She has lived fado since she was a child. The fact that she grew up in a fado family helped her to live surrounded by music and musicians from an early age, and to live that life in a very natural way. Therefore, she sings with the aptitude and strength of someone who grew up in Fado.
Sara Correia was only 13 years old when she was crowned winner of the Grande Noite do Fado and, soon after, she was invited to sing in one of the most mythical fado houses in the city, Casa de Linhares. There, she had the privilege of singing and learning alongside great names in fado, namely Celeste Rodrigues, Jorge Fernando, and Maria da Nazaré, among others. “Sara Correia”, the first album released under the Universal Music Portugal label, was created in partnership with producer Diogo Clemente. In Portugal, critics celebrated Sara Correia’s debut and unanimously applauded the one they called the “great voice of the new generation.” The album earned him, in 2019, two nominations in the first edition of the Play – Portuguese Music Awards.
However, in 2020 she released “Do Coração”, her second studio album, again produced and conceived in partnership with Diogo Clemente. In addition to traditional fado melodies, the album features compositions by Joana Espadinha, Carolina Deslandes, Luísa Sobral, António Zambujo, Jorge Cruz, and the aforementioned Diogo Clemente. In 2021 the album won one of the PLAY – Portuguese Music Awards, in the category “Best Fado Album”.
However, that year would invariably be marked by Sara Correia’s nomination for the most important world music award, the Latin Grammy. If this is a long-term goal of any career, Sara Correia achieves it with her second original record, “Do Coração”, in a nomination for Best Portuguese Roots Album. In 2022 she edited “Quero é Viver”, an original by António Variações from 1983, in a generic version of the Portuguese prime-time soap opera with the same name.
The song reaches, in the week of its release, the digital tops and YouTube trends. Fado is intrinsic to him. We find it in the way she expresses herself, in the words she sings, and in whatever song she sings. Sara Correia is Fado. Live, she manages this rare feat, of pinning us to the ground at the same time that it makes us rise. The moving intensity with which she gives herself, the truth with which she does so, provokes a unique magnetism. On stage, she is accompanied by a luxury band that features Diogo Clemente on viola, Ângelo Freire on Portuguese guitar, Frederico Gato on bass, and Joel Silva on drums.
2023 is a long-lasting year again and the first known single is the beautiful “Bocas do Mundo”, in a duet with the flamenco prodigy also nominated for a Latin Grammy, Israel Fernández. And it is with this new work that we will be able to see and hear her at Jardins do Marquês – Oeiras Valley, on the 28th of June.
FLAMENCO PASSION SHOW
Flamenco Passion is a company born out of an interest in promoting flamenco art in all its many facets, on a journey that includes names such as Paco de Lucía and Camarón de la Isla. This is a show that has dance as the protagonist, in all its strength, rhythm, and splendor.
And as the name says, “From Lucía to Camarón”, these two historic names will serve as the motto for this huge celebration of Flamenco. In this sense, one of the inspirations for this presentation will be Paco de Lucía, considered the Flamenco guitarist with the most international prestige, preserving the genre’s roots throughout his career. And, of course, there is also a reference to a name essential to understanding the history of jondo singing in the second half of the 20th century: Camarón de la Isla, a revolutionary in singing who contributed to the reinvention of the genre, while always respecting its most fundamental essence. genuine.
This presentation is made of feeling, art, and passion, ingredients that can be savored by the public with each chord. The choreographies are inventive and worthy of dazzling any lover of the genre, without ever treading more traditional ground. The most typical elements of Flamenco are found here: the piano, the violin, the flute, and the electric bass, seeking both recognition and surprise.
This is a show thought out in detail, capable of involving the audience in an unforgettable journey. And for this objective to be fulfilled, it has a series of artists who perfectly embody the passionate soul of Flamenco.
These rhythms pass through Jardins do Marquês – Oeiras Valley, on June 28, in the first part of the concert by fado singer Sara Correia.
