If you’re not a lesbian, what’s your name? Alice Azevedo
CCB . April 23 to May 4. Black Box
Three lesbians walk into a bar. They are not called lesbians, as you might imagine. Whether or not they are women is a question that arises. They walk into a lesbian bar. They want to kiss whoever is there, but one of them doesn’t like being there: she doesn’t like ghettos, and she doesn’t believe in labels. He once had an allergic reaction to some canned goods because he doesn’t believe in labels. What are all these words needed for? She likes women and that’s it. The others begin to explain.
Starting from the sentence “If you’re not a lesbian, what’s your name?” (title of an article published in the 1st edition of Lilás magazine, in 1993), this show launches an investigation into these infamous words that over time have come to describe or prescribe what certain people, communities and practices were. She takes a journey through lesbian literature to trace a story: of words and the lack thereof Lesbian or not, we are all something – many things. Some of which we are proud of, others we are ashamed of, and others we don’t even think much about being or not being. Are there endangered species in the midst of all this? Can we be where we are from if we don’t know the history of our country? What if we don’t know the history of our lesbians?
