Seixal hosts Closing Party for the 9th edition of the Kid’s Guernicakids project

Seixal will host the Closing Party of the 9th edition of the Kid’s Guernica project. The event takes place on May 24th, at Parque Municipal do Serrado, in Amora, and will bring together around 5 thousand students from schools in the Setúbal region.

This party marks the end of the project, in which students from the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education and secondary education in the Setúbal region are challenged to create artistic works about peace, highlighting the bombing of the city of Guernica, during the Spanish Civil War.

«It is important to remember and value the values of peace and cooperation, and it is essential to instil these values in young people. They are the future of the country and the world and the more children and young people have in their thoughts and actions the need to eradicate wars and conflicts between people, the more peace there will be in the world in the future”, says the president of the Municipal Council of Seixal, Paulo Silva.

At the closing party, students finish painting the winning work on a giant canvas, in moments of sharing, cooperation and complicity, and all the work done will be displayed.

In addition to painting the canvas, sporting and cultural activities take place throughout the day in Serrado Municipal Park.

This initiative is organized by the Association of Municipalities of the Setúbal Region, in partnership with the municipalities and schools in the region. The closing party is organized in collaboration with the Seixal City Council.

The Kid’s Guernica project is an international artistic project, which arises from the desire to promote the values of peace, through artistic expression, marking the bombing of the city of Guernica, during the Spanish Civil War.

It involves entrusting children and young people from all over the world with the task of collectively creating a canvas on the theme of peace, with the dimensions of the emblematic painting «Guernica» – by Picasso –, measuring 7.8 meters by 3.5 meters.

In Portugal, this initiative is organized by the Association of Municipalities of the Setúbal Region in partnership with the municipalities and schools in the region.

The 9th edition of the Kid’s Guernica project has as its theme the 50th anniversary of April 25th, a fundamental milestone in the establishment of democracy in our country.

Students from the 2nd and 3rd cycles of primary and secondary education were challenged to create artistic works that were then selected by a jury.

Three final works were chosen, but only one of them will be reproduced on canvas, in the dimensions of Pablo Picasso’s painting «Guernica». The canvas is completed at the Closing Party, collectively, where all selected works will also be on display.
