The creation of the Peneda-Geres aimed at achieving this mountainous area of planning capable of valuing human activities and natural resources, with a view educational, tourist and scientific. Basically, it was to conserve soil, water, flora, and fauna, as well as preserve the landscape in this vast mountainous region of northwest Portuguese.
To get to Geres should go towards the municipality of Terras de Bouro, in the Minho province. Terras de Bouro is bordered on the north by Galicia, northeast by Bridge Municipality of Barca west by Vila Verde municipality, to the south by Amares municipality, south-west at Vieira do Minho municipality and the east, the Municipality of Montalegre.
7 NATURAL WONDERS
The Peneda-Geres National Park is considered one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal in the category of Protected Areas. The announcement was made at a ceremony in Portas do Mar, in Ponta Delgada, and broadcast live on RTP, having been revealed the names of those who will be, from now on, the ‘7 Wonders of Portugal.’
The National Park of Peneda-Geres ‘defeated’ in this category of Protected Areas, Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina and the Natural Reserve of Lagoa do Fogo. The Alentejo was, incidentally, the only region of the country that was not one of the titles in the competition.
An on-site review, the mayor of Terras de Bouro, Joachim Cracel not forgotten thanks to all supporters of the application, not the other municipalities that are part of the Peneda-Geres: Ponte da Barca, Bridge Barca, Melgado and Montalegre.
On the other hand, the famous Portuguese athlete Rosa Mota, Ambassador of the Peneda-Geres National Park, highlighted the importance of “caring and disseminate the natural potential of the country”, arguing that “every Portuguese should be proud of the natural heritage that you can enjoy. ” Showing up “very honored by the invitation,” Rosa Mota highlighted “the paths, rivers, basically all nature” involving the Peneda-Geres National Park, inviting all lovers of natural landscapes to visit Geres and believing they all come out “love this Portuguese natural wonder.”
