September is outdoor culture month in Lisbon
Between the 7th and 29th of September, Festas na Rua set up outdoor stages, inviting the public to the gardens, bandstands, squares and washhouses, with free cultural programming, to enjoy with family and friends.
There are nine major concerts, three festivals – dedicated to short films, video art, and, in the debut, the piano – and a parade around the ancient Iberian mask that will fill the city’s green spaces with musicians, cinema, orchestras, philharmonic bands, national and international artists.
The Festivities program begins on September 7th in Vale do Silêncio and it couldn’t start better, this year taking to the green park of Olivais arias from Carmen, by Bizet, Aida and Nabucco, by Verdi and Madama Butterfly, by Puccini, performed by the Gulbenkian Choir and Orchestra. A concert, conducted by maestro Cesário Costa, mostly dedicated to the choral and symphonic repertoire of opera and musicals.
Portuguese music is also highlighted in this edition of Festas na Rua with three special performances in one of Lisbon’s noble squares – Praça do Município. On the 13th, at 9 pm, António Chainho says goodbye to the stage with Lisboa Saudade, a unique show that marks the end of the long and renowned career of the guitarist and composer who takes the stage for the last time accompanied by Carminho, António Zambujo, Marta Pereira da Costa and the Naked Lunch String Quartet.
On the 14th it is Rui Massena’s turn. The maestro performs alone, with an ensemble and many guests, from 7 pm, in a show designed especially for this occasion.
Towards the end of the month, on the 28th, we return to the same Square for a conversation and a musical show that brings together names like Maro, Mayra Andrade or Criolo. A joint celebration of Portuguese music and its multiculturalism designed by the Mundu Nôbu Association of Dino D’Santiago and Liliana Valpaços.
Jazz no Jardim is the order for two Thursdays, starting at 7 pm. On the 12th, at Jardim da Quinta da Alfarrobeira (in São Domingos de Benfica), fado singer Cristina Branco and pianist Mário Laginha join the Hot Clube de Portugal Jazz Orchestra, recreating the 2019 concert with the Big Band from Rádio Frankfurt.
At Jardim da Quinta da Paz, in Lumiar, pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva and Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos present (on the 19th) the reissue of the album Bela Senão Sem – considered one of the best jazz albums when it was released in 2013.
The Philharmonic Bands are the protagonists of Sunday afternoons. Three concerts, with Sociedade Filarmónica União e Capricho Olivalense in Jardim da Quinta das Conchas (15th), Banda Musical e Artística da Charneca in Banda do Jardim do Campo das Amoreiras (22nd) and Banda da ACULMA in Banda do Bairro do Condado (29th), to hear traditional, popular and classical repertoire.
In addition to the music, the Festas na Rua brings the colour of the Iberian Mask, which returns to the city with a large parade and more than 450 participants (coming from the north and centre of the country and several provinces in Spain). A procession of ancestral traditions from the Iberian Peninsula will travel through downtown Lisbon and also showcase the famous Venetian masks.
Cinema no Estendal once again sets up a screen in the washrooms, this time at Pátio da Moca (Arroios) and Lumiar, to present a selection of short films between the Queer universe and the fiftieth anniversary of the 25th of April.
FUSO – Lisbon International Video Art Festival is back, presenting several outdoor sessions, between August 27th and September 1st. “Resistance, once again” is the theme of this 16th edition, which will take place in various places, from Belém to Campo Pequeno.
We close the program with the premiere of Piano City in Lisbon, on the last weekend of September. A festival dedicated to the piano that, over three days, presents more than 30 concerts by Portuguese and international artists, including renowned pianists and young talents. Presentations that will be divided between Palácio Galveias and the gardens of the Lisbon Museum – Palácio Pimenta and Coruchéus.
