September is coming, with Street Parties
The end of the holidays means a return to the city. In Lisbon, it’s time for Street Festivities, a time to slowly reconnect with the urban rhythm and enjoy the last days of summer.
Between September 6th and 21st, the program features musical and other activities in various green spaces and other outdoor stages, with unique performances with free admission.
We open the program in the great natural amphitheatre of the Vale do Silêncio this year with two major concerts on the first weekend of September.
For the seventh time, the Gulbenkian will perform at Parque Verde dos Olivais, presenting, on the 6th (Saturday), starting at 9:30 pm, works that marked great cinematic moments and major pieces by Verdi, Wagner, and Johann Strauss II, performed by the Choir and Orchestra. A concert conducted by Maestro Pedro Neves, featuring songs such as Ennio Morricone’s “The Mission: Gabriel’s Oboe” or John Williams’ “Harry Potter: Hedwig’s Theme,” offers a rare opportunity to hear excellent classical repertoire while sitting on the lawn in a truly special atmosphere.
The total lunar eclipse, scheduled for the 7th, serves as inspiration for “MOMENTUM – From the Valley to the Moon,” by Fernando Pereira & The New Age Band. A show that goes far beyond music, bringing together performance, humor, dance, poetry, and imagery, spanning four decades of the “Lord of Voices” career and featuring numerous guests, including Polish soprano Patrycja Gabrel.
In this show, beginning at 7 pm, the multifaceted Portuguese artist will perform a variety of themes, from classical music to fado, including timeless hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. He will also star in two new performances: a version of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and “Amar a Terra” (The Planet Love Song), the anthem of a campaign for peace, the planet, and humanity. This Sunday afternoon program promises to be full of contagious energy.
Festas na Rua also brings jazz to the gardens, bringing together orchestras and guest musicians in two intimate concerts, starting at 7 pm.
In the Jardim do Palácio da Alfarrobeira (in São Domingos de Benfica), on the 11th, the Funchal Jazz Orchestra, conducted by brothers Francisco and Alexandre Andrade, and the guitar duo Mano a Mano, also comprised of brothers Bruno and André Santos, will perform songs by this Madeiran duo with a 10-year career and five albums to their name.
At the Lisbon Museum, the gardens of the Pimenta Palace will serve as the backdrop for a concert on the 13th by the Hot Clube de Portugal Jazz Orchestra, which will share the stage with renowned American saxophonist John O’Gallagher.
And while music plays in the gardens, the movie screen will be set up on the steps of the Forno do Tijolo Market (Arroios), with a new edition of Cinema no Estendal. This project, which celebrates neighbourhood life and the art of short films by screening outdoor cinema, offers two screenings, starting at 8 pm. On the 12th, four award-winning films from last year’s Queer Lisboa will be featured as a preview of this year’s festival, and on the 13th, a selection curated by the O Pátio collective, which organises the event.
With the Festas na Rua (Street Parties), from September 17th to 21st, we also take a trip to Macau, an initiative organised by the Macau Government Tourist Office, at Terreiro do Paço. Five days of celebration of the centuries-old fusion of Eastern and Western cultures through music, dance, and technology, featuring a variety of Macanese and Portuguese artists, including Márcio Furtado, Don Fran, Born to Fail, and Inês Coito, from the Gebalis Jovens Talentos do Bairro initiative.
A brief performance by Cuca Roseta and a drone show, along with fireworks over the Tagus River, mark the official opening of the Vamos a Macau! program, starting at 9 p.m.
