UAU’s new production, Sex and Age (Sexo e a Idade), premiered on September 24th at the Auditório dos Oceanos at Casino Lisboa. It promises laughter, provocations, and a healthy dose of bittersweet honesty.
The plot follows four old friends who reunite to celebrate Vasco’s birthday. What begins as a night of fellowship, with a toast to friendship, soon turns into a stage for egos, secrets, and revelations. As the wine flows, the conversation turns to the women who have passed through their lives: exes, current, imagined, impossible. The play offers a reflection on what we try to understand but can never control: love, ageing, and vulnerabilities.

Directed by Adriano Luz and written by Roberto Pereira, the production features sharp dialogue and contradictory characters, reflecting the realities of everyday life with brutal honesty. The acerbic humour questions what lies behind the words spoken between friends, the lies we tell ourselves, and the feelings we rarely express.
On the eve of the premiere, a charity rehearsal was held, with proceeds going to APOIARTE — Casa do Artista. The organisers and production team announced that €7,116 had been raised to support the association’s work.

“Sex and Age” arrives at a time when Portuguese theatre has been embracing themes such as masculinity and relationships with humour and social critique. The play goes beyond laughter, challenging the audience to reflect on what lies behind “virility” and public image. For those who appreciate theatre with depth, humour, and a critical perspective on life, this play is an excellent choice—and, at the end, there will always be a toast to friends.
