Shakti: the Power of the Hindu Goddesses

Course at the Museum of the Orient

According to Hinduism, Shakti is the creative and omnipresent power, transversal to all existence, from thought to action, from energy to matter.

To understand this vital force of feminine origin, the Shakti, Four Faces of the Goddess course, divided into 4 sessions – April 1, 3, 8 and 10 – explores the mythology, history and iconography of four Hindu goddesses who embody Shakti: Kali, Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati.

Around each Devī (“goddess” in Sanskrit), meditations, visualizations and mantra invocations will be learned. To cultivate the power of Shakti in everyday life, participants will learn modern forms of traditional rituals and devotions.

Each session is dedicated to a goddess, her attributes and the dimension of Shakti she manifests. On April 1st, we discover the fierce Kali, synonymous with transformation and liberation. On the 3rd, it is the turn of Durga, the goddess of strength, justice and courage, who alleviates suffering and brings compassion. In the third session, attention turns to Lakshmi, goddess of love and abundance. Closing the cycle comes Saraswati, goddess of creativity, arts and learning, known for her wisdom and contemplation.

Taught by Filipa Veiga, this online course combines art, philosophy, history and mythology, to inspire participants to understand the energy of Shakti, and its cultural and spiritual dimensions.
