To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Centro Cultural de Belém and the life of António Mega Ferreira (1949-2022), the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra (OCP) joins forces with its «sister», the Young Portuguese Orchestra (JOP), to present a rare opportunity to hear one of the most extraordinary symphonies in the history of music, the Ninth Symphony by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911).

Conductor and genius composer, Mahler concentrated his impetus on creating vast works for large orchestral formations, cathartic compositions, whose emotional and expressive scope swept away his contemporaries.

Mahler never heard his Ninth Symphony – it is the last complete work he left us, a symphonic testament to life, death, love, darkness, and hope. «It is no longer Music, but the Earth», described Berthold Goldschmidt in this epilogue of tonalism, which transports us between ecstasy and transparency, in a sublime and refined language.

OCP premiered on September 13, 2007, on the stage of the Great Auditorium of the Centro Cultural de Belém, at the invitation of António Mega Ferreira, who always closely followed the development of the project with passion and brilliance. This tribute concert celebrates one of their favorite composers, performed for the first time by OCP and JOP.

We count on your collaboration in publicizing this concert which, under the direction of Pedro Carneiro and the creative brilliance of OCP joins the electrifying energy of JOP, for an unforgettable afternoon.
