‘SING SING’: A moving story of resilience to win the Oscars®
Premieres in cinemas on February 6th
‘SING SING’ stood out in the nominations for the 97th edition of the Oscars® with Colman Domingo’s nomination for ‘Best Actor’.
Greg Kwedar’s film is also nominated in the categories ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ and ‘Best Original Song’. Inspired by Sing Sing Prison’s Rehabilitation Through the Arts program, the narrative addresses the transformative power of art on the incarcerated population and presents one of the most powerful and striking performances of Domingo’s career.
In ‘SING SING’, Divine G (Colman Domingo) is an unjustly convicted prisoner who finds expression and art as a tool for personal and community transformation. Together with other incarcerated men, G forms a theatre group that challenges the limits imposed by the prison system, giving voice to life stories rarely explored in cinema. Inspired by the Rehabilitation Through the Arts Program, ‘SING SING’ earned Oscar® nominations for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ and ‘Best Original Song’, as well as a nomination in the ‘Best Actor’ category.
Alongside Domingo, the performances of Paul Raci (nominated for an Oscar® for Best Supporting Actor in 2021 for ‘Sound of Metal’) and Clarence Maclin (known for Divine Eye), a robbery convict who, since his release, has worked as a counsellor for young people through the creative arts, and his participation has received critical acclaim.
With a cast mostly made up of ex-convicts participating in the program (RTA), ‘SING SING’ has been gaining recognition from both the public and critics, thanks to its sensitivity and authenticity in addressing the stories of incarcerated men who, through theatre, they find hope and redemption.
In addition to the Oscar® nominations, ‘SING SING’ has received nominations for the BAFTA, the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Film Independent Spirit Awards and the Satellite Awards, and has already won 3 Gotham Awards.
Directed by Greg Kwedar (‘From the Other Side of the Border’), the film hits theatres on February 6th.
