Sintra marks the centenary of José Saramago, Agustina Bessa-Luís and Eugénio de Andrade
The Municipality of Sintra will mark the centenary of the birth of the writers José Saramago, Agustina Bessa-Luís, and Eugénio de Andrade with the initiative “100³” (100 ao Cube), in a program marked by various events throughout the municipality from April to November.
Throughout the year, you can participate in the most varied activities dedicated to these three illustrious writers, namely, visiting exhibitions, attending theatres, films, and shows, or attending conferences.
For this month, the Sintra municipality has prepared three free initiatives, one dedicated to Eugénio de Andrade, and two centered on José Saramago, the latter continuing the celebrations that started last year and continue in 2023 to also celebrate the 25th anniversary of the award of the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The first event will take place on April 13, at 6 pm, at the Municipal Library of Sintra, with the motto “Conversas à Volta de… Saramago”. Open to the community in general, this moment intends to be an informal dialogue about the life, work, and legacy of José Saramago, with the presence of the editor Zeferino Coelho and the writers Afonso Cabral and Miguel Real.
On the 22nd of April, this cultural space will once again be the stage for this initiative, with the intimate show “The Poet of the Earth”, by Ópera Tejo, with readings of texts by Eugénio de Andrade by Carla Chambel, accompanied by the piano by Raul Pinto.
The Olga Cadaval Cultural Center hosts the work “Memorial do Convento”, from April 18 to 20, by Éter Produção Cultural, with shows at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. Reservations must be made via email and are intended exclusively for the educational community.
This play is a dramaturgical adaptation, which does not alter the words of the author of the literary work and is based on rewriting work, selection of significant excerpts, creation of implicit dialogues in the literary text, and creation of dramatic time and space.
