After the initial impact of the single “All the possibilities of the universe,” Slowburner, the musical project of Élvio Rodrigues, is back with a new theme.
“Wildcard,” the second single from the debut album Life Happens In The Interim, is already available and promises to capture attention with its powerful message and intriguing music video, in which the visual narrative intertwines with the concept of the song.
In “Wildcard,” Slowburner explores the power of free will, a metaphor that transforms life into a game where each of us has a special card – the “wildcard” – that can change the course of our existence. However, as in life, discernment is also necessary here to know when and how to use that card. This single is accompanied by a music video that, like the song, navigates between the real and the symbolic. Filmed in the fields of Alentejo, the video transports the viewer to a dreamlike setting, where the discovery of a mysterious card leads the protagonist (Slowburner) to a surreal experience, culminating in an open and possibility-filled ending, leaving the audience questioning what is real and what is merely a reflection of their deepest desires.
This single paves the way for the release of the long-awaited album Life Happens In The Interim, which will be available on September 13th on all streaming platforms, as well as in vinyl format. In this work, Slowburner takes us on an introspective journey, exploring the tensions of modern life – the delicate balance between the search for what truly makes us feel alive and the demands of daily life that challenge our attention and energy. The album, composed of nine tracks, culminates precisely in “Wildcard,” leaving the listener at a crossroads, where the decision about the next step is left to each individual’s discretion.
This project arises following an already remarkable journey of Slowburner. In 2017, Élvio Rodrigues released the debut EP Before I Return To Dust, followed by the mixtape Sunday Mornings Are For Piano in 2019, which was born out of a creative challenge on social media. His capacity for innovation and artistic sensitivity earned him an honourable mention in the Novos Talentos FNAC 2018 competition and, more recently, recognition as a finalist in the Festival Termómetro 2023, where he performed the song “Wildcard” live, among others.
Life Happens In The Interim promises to be a milestone in Slowburner’s career, an album where piano, field recordings, and carefully crafted environments create a space where music transcends classifications, inviting us to a deep immersion in the complexity of life.
With this release, Slowburner reaffirms himself as one of the most intriguing projects in the contemporary music scene, where reality and imagination meet, creating a unique and engaging narrative.
