Sofia Leão discovers herself and the world, she goes to the Sea with the bravery of someone who creates because she has to. And yet another mystery is born, made of songs, words, voices and melodies – invisible materials that only the soul understands.
Sofia Leão now discovers herself and the world with Mar. The young singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer is 18 years old and was only 13 when she recorded for the first time with her father, Rodrigo Leão. She participated in “Bailarina“, a song from the album O Método, which also featured the Choir of the Associação Musical dos Amigos das Crianças. It was at this institution, AMAC, that she studied classical piano with Professor Sara Fernandes, having completed the 8th grade of that instrument there. These studies and the piano are some of the tools that she has now used in this Mar, but they are not the only ones.
Sofia’s process of musical discovery began a long time ago, at the age of 10, when she began using her computer to record her first ideas. But, Sofia herself explains, it was only more recently, at the age of 15, that these first ideas began to take shape.
“Thanks to the invaluable help of long-time friends who have always been with me, I was able to set up a little corner in my room with the necessary materials to begin exploring the ideas that resonated within me. I fell in love with the magic that voices, together, have. It’s a kind of vocal puzzle made by trial and error, resulting in sometimes improbable atmospheres,” she explains.
The next step was to take what she had started creating alone in her room to the studio. With the help of João Eleutério, a musician, producer, and also a friend who shares a studio with Rodrigo Leão, Sofia gave new shape to these ideas starting at the end of 2023. This work is now being revealed. Like Sofia herself. In the song “Eu Não Me Conheço”, Sofia asks universal questions – “Where does the sea end? Where does the sky begin?” – but that gained another resonance with her calm, almost whispered voice.
In the songs she now presents to us, made of transparent and simple melodies drawn on the piano, wrapped in strings or fleeting electronic environments, elevated by harmonies that she creates with her voice, the so-called vocal puzzles in which she fits the pieces that her imagination offers her, Sofia Leão discovers herself and the world, and sets out to Mar with the bravery of someone who creates because it has to be. And yet another mystery is born, made of songs, words, voices and melodies – invisible materials that only the soul understands.
Sofia Leão’s debut album has two singles: “Valsa” (February 28) and “Não meconhece” (April 4). “Não seria tão triste” is the main track of the album’s release, released on May 9 by UGURU.
