Sonic Figures project live with “Imago” project by Hugo Vasco Reis
with guest musician Trevor McTait
“Sonic Figures Project” is a project by Hugo Vasco Reis, whose premise consists of listening and mediating silent sonic environments, involving experimentation, reflection, collaboration and creation.
Hugo Vasco Reis, in composition and electronics, has the collaboration of Trevor McTait, viola d’arco, and will perform on January 17th, in Lisbon, at the O’culto da Ajuda space, in the context of Art’s Birthday 2025 – Euroradio Ars Acustica Special Evening; the next day he will be in Porto, at the Music Conservatory. On January 25th he performs in Vila do Conde, at the Music Conservatory; January 30th will be the turn of the Teatro Municipal da Guarda. On February 6th he returns to Lisbon, for a performance at Casa dos Bicos, at the José Saramago Foundation (National Music Museum “Fora de Portas”). And finally, on February 21st, it will be Porto’s turn again, at Sonoscopia. At the end of the series of shows, Hugo Vasco Reis and Trevor McTait go to the studio to record and document “Sonic Figures Project”, scheduled for release in April 2025.
Based on field recordings from different political, economic, social, aesthetic and ethical contexts, a conception of sounds present in the environment, not always heard, is presented due to the limitations of our hearing. This project aims to reflect on perception and memory, inciting a new sonic awareness of the “absent” reality in which we all live. Following an approach that includes metaphorical associations, a sonic horizon of intention, speculation and subjectivity is projected, where a drop of water can be more audible than a waterfall.
Hugo Vasco Reis is a composer and researcher, living in Zurich and Porto. His artistic practice extends to acoustic music, electroacoustic music and sound installations, collaborating with musicians and visual artists, who regularly present their works across Europe. His music is documented in eight monographic albums, several of which were nominated by SPA and GDA for best classical music work. His pieces have been awarded or selected in several national and international competitions.
He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, KUG (Austria). He studied composition with Isabel Mundry at the Zurich University of the Arts, ZHdK (Zurich, Switzerland), as a scholarship holder from the Foundation Nicati-de Luze, with Mark André and Stefan Prins at the Hochschule für Musik Dresden (Dresden, Germany) and with António Pinho Vargas, Luís Tinoco and Sérgio Azevedo at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (Lisbon). He also studied Portuguese guitar at the Porto Music Conservatory and in Pedro Caldeira Cabral’s private class.
