Montemor-o-Velho | Lousada | Castelo de Paiva | Paredes de Coura | Mondim de Basto | Monção | Caminha
The Space Festival returns from the 3rd to the 12th of November, with the aim of bringing moments of experimental and improvised music to 7 low-density territories, maintaining the visit to Montemor-o-Velho, Paredes de Coura, Caminha and Monção, and adding Castelo from Paiva, Mondim de Basto and Lousada to the festival’s itinerary.
In addition to concerts, the program will feature installations, workshops, conversations and film sessions.

Like last year, Space Festival intends to continue providing intimate meetings between artists and the public, in spaces that are worth visiting: in addition to some cultural spaces already used in previous editions such as Teatro Esther de Carvalho in Montemor-o-Velho, Centro Cultural de Paredes de Coura, Cine Teatro João Verde in Monção and Teatro Valadares in Caminha, the 2023 edition includes visits to some new rooms and less conventional spaces in the remaining locations. The festival proposes new concerts in three churches in Montemor-o-Velho Castle (Chapel of Santo António, Church of St. Maria da Alcáçova and Church of St. Maria Madalena), also passing through Solar dos Pinas and TOCA. In Lousada, the reception is in charge of the Casa Museu Vilar, with a day dedicated to the relationship between improvised music and animated cinema. In Paredes de Coura, the program extends to the Espírito Santo Chapel in addition to the Cultural Centre. This edition also sees the debut of the festival in Mondim de Basto (Favo das Artes), in Castelo de Paiva (Municipal Auditorium) and in two new spaces in Monção (Centro Cultural do Vale do Mouro and Quinta de Santiago).

The program includes several well-known names in the national experimental and improvised music scene, some of which perform in new formations. Among them are names such as Hedera4tet (violin quartet composed by Carlos Zíngaro, David Magalhães Alves, Francisco Lima da Silva and Bernardo Aguiar), Expurgar: Derivas Sónicas e Espaciais (project by Dária Salgado, Sérgio Tavares and Nuno Trocado), Gonçalo Almeida ( solo), Jorge Queijo Trio (where percussionists João Mortágua and Olivia Pinto join), Sublumia: Liquid Aesthesia (project by Henrique Fernandes, Jorge Quintela and João Ricardo) and also Luís Vicente Trio, a group that has frequently performed in large international stages (composed by Luís Vicente, Gonçalo Almeida and Pedro Melo Alves), Luís Fernandes (solo), Abi Feijó & Samuel Martins Coelho, Marta Zapparoli & Albrecht Loops, Luís Bittencourt & Gileno Santana, Nomad Nenúfar (Tom Maciel, Bernardo Tinoco, João Pereira), Cluster – Experimental Group of Matosinhos and Duo Guitolão (António Eustáquio and Carlos Barreto).

The Space Ensemble, an artistic project that originated in the first editions of the festival and the main partner in the organization, will perform in different musical formations in different locations, especially taking on the educational service programming with the concert films Um Corvo na Cidade and Piratas and Mermaids, Ostras and Whales, where documentary and animated films serve as inspiration for musical improvisation, and with the show Cine-música, which will be the result of community work developed with students from the Academia de Música Fernandes Fão de Vila Praia de Âncora.
One of the other objectives of the festival is to stimulate territorial cohesion in the enjoyment of diverse artistic shows and the circulation of artists of this type of music throughout the national territory.

The Space Festival is organized by the Rock’n’Cave Cultural Association. It again has the support of the General Directorate of Arts and the Municipalities of Paredes de Coura, Monção, Caminha, and CITEC, this year garnering the support of the Municipality of Montemor- o-Velho, Mondim de Basto, Castelo de Paiva, Casa Museu Vilar and Quinta de Santiago.
All activities are free entry, with the possibility of a free donation, with the exception of shows in spaces with their own ticketing systems, where the usual prices for each theatre apply: Cine Teatro João Verde (BOL), Favo das Artes (Ticketline) and Paredes de Coura Cultural Center (BOL).
