One more game, one more doubtful hand around a lion who, week after week, is leaving signs that this will indeed be a complicated season. This time Sporting went to the Netherlands and returned to Portugal with a 2-3 loss to PSV.
The first few minutes seemed to indicate that Leonel Pontes had finally imposed some tactical discipline on the team, either by the way he defended or by the rigor with which he tried to build from the defense.
However, this whole ‘castle’ collapsed after just 20 minutes when, following a counterattacking move, Donyell Malen struck Renan Ribeiro with a fine shot. From then on, nothing was the same.
Just five minutes later, Sebastian Coates, in an attempt to cut a dangerous pass, eventually put the ball into his own goal. Before the break, Bruno Fernandes (who else?) Scored a penalty, but the lions were unable to ride the wave of recovery.
Right in the early stages of the second half, after a corner kick (the damn set balls …), Baumgartl appeared completely alone in the heart of the penalty area, pushing into the goal. On the verge of the end, ‘kid’ Pedro Mendes scored a beautiful goal, but it was no use.
Sporting ends the opening day of Group D in the Europa League without any points, like Rosenborg. Already the lead is shared by PSV and LASK Linz, Alvalade club opponent on the next round.
