Stanley Jordan announces two concerts in Portugal
one of the greatest guitarists in history
Legendary American musician nominated four times for the International Grammy, performs in Lisbon and Porto, and reveals that he is an admirer of the singer Mariza.
One of the greatest guitarists in the history of music will perform in Portugal. The iconic Stanley Jordan has concerts scheduled for Lisbon, on the 7th of May (Teatro Tivoli) and in Porto, on the 14th (Casa da Música). Production is by Backstage Productions.
In his nearly forty-year career, Stanley Jordan has taken his unique way of playing with the so-called ‘touch technique’ with eight fingers to many parts of the world, but Portugal is one of the places where the musician claims to be most identified.
“Portugal has become one of my favorite places to play because I really love the way people listen to music in the country. The best way I can explain it is that the Portuguese listen holistically. They appreciate the intricate and complex musical passages and at the same time resonate with the deep emotional parts. I can relate to that because I am the same way. So that makes it easier for me as a musician because it’s my ideal audience”, explained the 63-year-old musician.
A classically trained pianist, Jordan has always sought greater freedom to play his guitar. The artist applied piano principles to do this. Jordan’s playing technique allows the guitarist to achieve melodies and chords simultaneously. And even play two different guitars at the same time, or even a guitar and a piano.
Jordan likes and knows Portuguese music and closely follows the work of a great Portuguese singer, who spares no praise.
“An artist that I particularly like is Mariza. She brings a new voice to an old and beautiful tradition. Her voice is powerful and dramatic, but at the same time, one feels the tenderness and nostalgia that made fado a lasting musical style. It’s amazing to think that fado has been popular for two centuries! And by the way, Mariza sings, you can even hear the old Arab influence. It’s like Middle Eastern blues with a modern twist,” says Jordan.
