Stay Hotels promotes the recycling of cork stoppers
Since the beginning of the project, in 2013, STAY HOTELS has been committed to developing increasingly sustainable solutions in its hotels from north to south of the country.
In addition to the water in cardboard packaging and the continuous efforts to reduce the use of disposable plastics, the national hotel chain promotes the collection and recycling of cork stoppers, contributing to the reuse of this natural resource.
Whenever a customer consumes a bottle of wine in one of the nine JUST DELICIOUS bars, the cork stoppers are collected in a glass jar to be later sent for recycling. In this way, it is possible to bring other products to life, such as building materials, automotive and aerospace components or fashion items.
The national hotel brand has been part of Quercus’ Green Cork project since 2017, which has already allowed the collection of more than 84 million corks. Through the revenue from stoppers delivered for recycling, Quercus also finances the “Common Forest” initiative, under which more than 925 thousand indigenous trees have already been planted in Portugal, such as the cork oak.
The protection of the environment occupies a prominent place in the DNA of STAY HOTELS, which has always practised eco-efficient management to minimize its environmental impact, namely through recycling and the rational use of natural resources and energy.
The hotel brand has been investing in the implementation of several sustainable measures, which help to protect the environment and combat climate change.
At the end of 2018, it replaced the plastic bags used for packaging pillows with biodegradable bags based on potato starch, and in 2019, the brand introduced water from the Earth-Water brand breakfast buffet, the only one in Portugal whose packaging is produced in cardboard and whose profits revert entirely to the United Nations World Food Program.
