Student at Castelo Branco Polytechnic Institute creates laser harp

A student at the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (IPCB) has created a laser harp that will be integrated into a business project to be developed at the Center for Innovative Companies (CEI), which was announced today.

“This project allowed me to develop a device that could represent skills, themes and knowledge acquired throughout the learning process at the School of Technology (EST), as well as being articulated and complemented with my knowledge and experience in the musical environment” explains Miguel Fernandes, student of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications at EST.

By interrupting one or more optical harps from the laser harp, a musician can produce sounds.

The developed device is a laser MIDI controller that, in itself, does not produce sound, and must be connected to sound-generating devices compatible with the MIDI protocol, such as hardware synthesizers, samplers, or plugins ‘on a computer.

The laser harp allows polyphony as long as the equipment attached to it is a polyphonic device and still capable of selecting different scales.

Thanks to an LED strip incorporated in the frame, it also allows to associate a color with a musical scale or a set of notes.

Currently in the prototype stage, the harp will be progressively improved and integrated into a business project to be developed at the Center of Innovative Companies of Castelo Branco (CEI).
