Teatro das Beiras in Almada with The Judge of Beira
The Judge of Beira, by Gil Vicente, directed by Nuno Carinhas, is coming to Almada on the 28th and 29th of November, Saturday at 9 PM, and Sunday at 4 PM. The performance is a co-production of Teatro das Beiras with TMJB.
The Judge of Beira, a farce by Gil Vicente, is a continuation of another play by the same author: The Auto of Inês Pereira. In this play, the protagonist marries a somewhat inept man — Pêro Marques — who turns out to be a pushover. In The Judge of Beira, we will find Pêro Marques again, still married to Inês Pereira, but this time made a judge. And — as one might expect — he remains bewildered. At his hearings, there appears Ana Dias, who accuses Pêro Marques’ son of having violated her daughter; Alonso López, who incriminates Ana Dias of being a pimp; and a squire, who accuses Ana Dias of being a thief. Finally, four brothers come to dispute the inheritance left to them by their father. As would be expected, Pêro Marques resolves all these disputes most absurdly, but — interestingly — all the sentences turn out to be reasonable.
Founded in 1974 in Covilhã, Teatro das Beiras has been a professional company since 1994. Over half a century, it has created more than 100 performances. Its repertoire, vast and varied, spans various eras of world dramaturgy: Lope de Rueda, Molière, Goldoni, Chekhov, Strindberg, Sean O’Casey, Brecht, Tennessee Williams, and Thomas Bernhard, among many others. It has been co-created with the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, CENDREV, ACERT, and Teatro do Montemuro. Since 2015, it has been a member of the Iberian Circuit of Performing Arts, of which it was a founder.
