The national tour of the Lisbon Jazz Sextet, celebrating the group’s four decades, begins in Lisbon on September 22nd at the Tivoli BBVA Theatre.
Mário Laginha (piano), Mário Barreiros (drums), Tomás Pimentel (trumpet), Edgar Caramelo (saxophone), Ricardo Toscano (saxophone), and Francisco Brito (double bass) make up the collective that was founded in 1984 and has established itself as one of the most notable jazz groups in Portugal. At the time, this was the first jazz group with full-time professional musicians.
The Lisbon Jazz Sextet was composed of Mário Laginha, Mário Barreiros, Pedro Barreiros, Tomás Pimentel, Edgar Caramelo and Jorge Reis. Still, the early death of saxophonist Jorge Reis led Ricardo Toscano and Francisco Brito to join the group that brings together musicians from different generations.
The group performs with a front of three wind instruments, a trumpet and two saxophones, and thus brings to the stage arrangements with rich sounds and original harmonisations that reinforce the musical sophistication introduced 40 years ago in Portugal by a jazz group with an extended formation, a sextet.
Four decades later, the Lisbon Jazz Sextet continues to be a reference in jazz in Portugal, and its compositions reflect the history of this musical genre in the country, which, although it has had slow growth, has ended up conquering its space in the music scene.
Along this trajectory, in addition to a rich artistic legacy, there has been a greater professionalisation of musicians and infrastructure, positioning jazz among the main stages and cultural circuits in the country.
In this concert, the Lisbon Jazz Sextet will revisit the compositions from their first and only album, Ao Encontro, and present new themes in this celebration of their 40th anniversary, in a musical encounter at the Tivoli BBVA Theater, full of irreverence and that pays homage to the memory of Jorge Reis and the history of jazz in Portugal.
