Teatro Tivoli BBVA hosts opening concert of the season of the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra

16 September, 21H

The Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra has scheduled five concerts throughout the 2024/2025 season at Teatro Tivoli BBVA.

After a season full of successes at Teatro Tivoli BBVA, the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra (OML) returns to perform at the Theatre for another season of classical music, starting on September 16.

The OML 2024/2025 program includes five concerts in the main hall of the Tivoli BBVA Theatre, in which it will present classic and contemporary works, in a diversified and innovative musical celebration that brings together in the same space, two emblematic institutions of the city of Lisbon.

“It is with great pride that we renew this partnership with Metropolitana. The public welcomed our commitment to the orchestral repertoire and the qualities of the outstanding musicians of the Metropolitan. The Tivoli BBVA Theatre is open to culture and, in this way, we bring to our audience the most diverse enriching musical experiences”, says Paulo Dias, Director of the Tivoli BBVA Theatre.

Miguel Honrado, Executive Director of the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, adds that “for the Metropolitan this has been an unforgettable experience and is proof that there is a huge potential for attracting audiences to classical music. The enthusiasm of all makes us prolong this confluence of perspectives: music and life in mutual and constant challenge, in this emblematic concert hall that is the Tivoli BBVA Theater.”

PROGRAMMING 2024/2025

The season’s schedule kicks off with the opening concert at the Tivoli Theatre BBVA on 16 September: “Haydn Style”, a Concertante Symphony that features four soloists in charge of the orchestra – Sally Dean, Lurdes Carneiro, Joana Dias and Catarina Gonçalves – under the guidance of conductor Pedro Neves.

On January 26, António Jorge Gonçalves joins the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra at the Tivoli BBVA Theatre, designing in real time the designs and colours that illustrate “Haydn For a Day”, a concert that presents the three symphonies composed by Haydn, in which all musicians shine as if it were a solo concert.

In a tribute to popular music, composer Vasco Mendonça gives voice to words that cross the Atlantic in the poems of Tracy K. Smith and Terrance Hayer, performing “Folk” on February 25 at the Tivoli BBVA Theater. This concert will also be performed the compositions by György Ligeti, Luciano Berio and Béla Bartók.

In the month that marks International Women’s Day, OML presents “Beethoven no Feminino”, in a concert scheduled at Teatro Tivoli BBVA on March 17, which brings the stage to maestrina Teresa Riveiro Böhm to direct the interpretation of A Walk to Beethoven, by Swedish composer Britta Byström. The soloist Janete Santos joins later to play the Concerto for Flute and Strings that Anne Victorino d’Almeida also composed in the past decade. The program ends with the presentation of the Symphony N.º 7 by the German composer.

The last concert precedes the arrival of summer, on June 15, at Teatro Tivoli BBVA. The Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon celebrates the “Eight Stations”, in an orchestral presentation that counts with Ana Pereira, the Concertino of the OML, in the musical direction and as soloist of this concert. Tonight is an epic confrontation between two great musicians of different styles and eras: Antonio Vivaldi and Astor Piazzolla. If the former is distinguished by its luxuriant baroque sound, the latter stands out for its nostalgic voluptuousness reminiscent of Argentine tango, closing OML’s program at Teatro Tivoli BBVA for the 2024/2025 season.
