Teatro Varieties with the smell of popcorn on the return to Lisbon of the POPULAR play by Sara Inês Gigante

After touring several theatres in the country, the POPULAR show, created by actress and director Sara Inês Gigante, returns to Lisbon for a unique performance at Teatro Variedades on January 4, at 9 p.m. The show challenges and questions the stereotypes of pop culture under the apparatus of entertainment.

Winner of the 6th edition of the 2023 Amélia Rey Colaço Scholarship, POPULAR is a show between humour and satire with an autobiographical premise that oscillates between fiction and reality – the desire of its creator and performer, Sara Inês Gigante, to become a popular artist.

Under the provocative cover of pure entertainment – popcorn, euphoric shouts, music, bright colours, light games, informal language, and direct interaction with the audience – the artist proposes a reflection that starts from popular culture to take the audience to deeper places, but is very current. Among them is the need for validation and belonging, the impostor syndrome or the polarization between mass and erudite cultures.

According to the artist, POPULAR is “a reflection on us, as a public and as a society in an exercise of seduction that flows into a symbolic and metaphorical reflection on manipulation and populism”. After all, “POPULAR will always end up questioning whether it could have been popular or not”.

Sara Inês Gigante was born in 1994 in Viana do Castelo. Graduated from ACE – Teatro do Bolhão in Porto, acting course and graduated from the Higher School of Cinema Theatre in Lisbon, acting course. He made his professional debut in a show directed by Pedro Frias, and in 2015 participated in a collective that brought to the scene a play by Tiago Rodrigues at Teatro do Bairro. He also worked with the directors Ricardo Neves-Neves, Jorge Silva Melo, Tiago Guedes, Catarina Requeijo, Bruno Bravo, and Nuno Nunes, among others. In 2021, she debuted as a solo creator with the show “YOLO” integrated into the festival Temps d’Images, and in 2022, presented the creation “Massa Mãe”.

The POPULAR show premiered on June 7, 2024 at the Gil Vicente Festivals, at the Vila-Flor Cultural Center in Guimarães, and was performed at the Teatro Viriato in Viseu, Teatro Meridional in Lisbon, Espaço do Tempo in Montemor-o-Novo, Teatro Cine in Torres Vedras, and Moagem in Fundão.

With musical production and sound by the artist FOQUE and the musical collaboration of singer Cláudia Pascoal, POPULAR will be recorded by RTP for later broadcast.
