This contemporary interpretation of Gil Vicente’s text by Pedro Penim is the first of five productions by the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II that the renovated performance hall at Parque Mayer will host until October, in a relationship of institutional collaboration and proximity that is happening for the second time. in the history of two important cultural centres in the capital.

A Farsa de Inês Pereira

“A Farsa de Inês Pereira” is the culmination of a trilogy dedicated to the family conceived by author and director Pedro Penim, which began with “Pais & Filhos” in 2021, followed by “Casa Portuguesa” in 2022. Five centuries after its publication from the original by Gil Vicente, Pedro Penim brings to the fore what is considered the most perfect work by the “founder of Portuguese theatre”, a comedy that already questions the mentality and role of women in social and family life at the time. In the rewriting of this comic text, Inês appears again as a woman ahead of her time, of our time, in a satire that questions those who are considered the pillars of contemporary society, namely, work, sexuality and family.

“The remarkable presence of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II in the programming of a space that is now resurfacing is very important and, despite the specific reasons for this stay, we would like the relationship between the two theatres to continue in the future”, says Joaquim René, director of the Variety and Capitol Theater, in Parque Mayer. “The programme presented at Teatro Variedades follows a desire for diversity, which includes the reinterpretation of classics, the presentation of contemporary texts and original creations”, adds the person responsible for the two spaces managed by Lisboa Cultura.

It is worth remembering that the presence of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II in Parque Mayer is not new. After the terrible fire of 1964, which destroyed practically the entire building of the National Theater, it moved to the Capitólio where it presented several plays, until 1970. Repeating this relationship of collaboration, proximity and even “good neighbourliness” between the two spaces, until In October 2025, Teatro Variedades will host four more shows presented by Teatro Nacional D. Maria II – “Men Hediondos” (May 2 to 4), “The women who celebrate the Thesmophorias” (June 11 to 15), “Reparations, Baby” (July 9-27) and “Cleopatra’s Nose, of Course” (September 13-October 5).
