Technology will contribute to an investment of 220 billion euros in hydrogen

At a time when the socioeconomic context and the willingness of countries to move forward with more sustainable economic models are shaking the energy market, hydrogen asserts itself as a relevant factor for the energy transition.

This key element towards a zero carbon footprint has become one of the most sustainable and effective energy options for achieving decarbonisation goals and is gaining weight as a fuel source, especially for use in the transport and industry sectors.

According to a report by the Hydrogen Council – an initiative launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos -, 680 large-scale hydrogen projects were presented in 2022, with direct investment expected to reach 220 billion euros (240 billion US dollars), by 2030.

In this context, NTT DATA developed the report “Hydrogen: The New Commodity Powering a Greener Economy”, which analyzes hydrogen as part of the green economy towards which society wants to evolve. A

The company is working on projects that put technology at the center, supporting the acceleration of the energy transition, namely through the digital transformation and acceleration of businesses supported by renewable sources, such as solar, wind or hydroelectric energy, or businesses centered on hydrogen production. All of this contributes to accelerating the development of a mature market, aligned with the countries’ strategy and with the policies established by the EU in terms of emissions.

According to Luís Vaz de Carvalho, Partner, Head of Utilities practice at NTT DATA Portugal, “Hydrogen is gaining more and more relevance as a fuel and raw material for production processes in industry. It is, moreover, an important element for the energy transition and, despite already having a real role in several application domains, it is necessary to accelerate the use cases of its use. Only in this way can hydrogen have a more generalized and integrated applicability, instead of being localized and focused only on a few industries. The experience that NTT DATA has in the energy sector and with the main organizations that are part of its value chain, allows it to support the implementation of different technologies that support different business processes also in the hydrogen ecosystem.”
