Telmo Pires was born in Bragança and at the age of two he moved to Essen, Germany. He discovered his connection to Portuguese roots and traditional music, especially Fado, from a young age.
In 2001 he released his first album, Chansons-Fado-Lieder, an author’s edition that combined songs in French, German and English, as well as fado adaptations. He moves to Berlin and forms a band with musicians with jazz roots. In 2004 he signed with the German jazz label Traumton Records and edited his first album entirely in Portuguese, Passos, with six songs of his own. In 2009, the album Sinal follows, in partnership with the German pianist Maria Baptist.
In 2011 he starts a collaboration in Lisbon with the musician and producer Davide Zaccaria and in 2012 he edits the album Fado Promessa. In 2014 he performs the first of several performances at the Museu do Fado and in 2016 he launches the album Ser Fado, combining traditional fados with new poems and unpublished themes. Ser Fado includes an unpublished song by António Variações — When passing through Braga below — offered to Telmo Pires by the Variações brothers, in the person of Jaime Ribeiro.
In February 2020 he released Through Fado after an eight-concert tour in Germany, which led the fado singer to step on the stage of the Berliner Philharmonie for the first time. Telmo Pires considers Through Fado to be «a pure album»: Portuguese guitar, fado guitar and bass.
It is this whole route, and above all the themes of the last album, that Telmo Pires takes, in this concert, to the stage of the CCB.
