Termas de Portugal maintains a trend of increasing customers and billing

In recent years, Termas de Portugal has seen a growing trend in the number of clients, especially among children and young people, receiving 123,000 people in 2017, 0.3% more than in the previous year.

After a period of decline, between 2010 and 2014, since the beginning of 2015, there has been an increase in the number of clients seeking health and wellness programs, according to the secretary general of the Association of Spa of Portugal, João Pinto Barbosa.

Although there are no indicators of occupancy rates, said the representative, the total number of therapeutic treatments in 2017 was around 1,300,000 in the 41 thermal establishments that are operating in the country (in the mainland), in addition to the Ferraria Thermal Baths, in the Azores.

A total of 420,000 days of treatments and 90,000 days of thermal well-being were performed in the spa at the Associação das Termas de Portugal (ATP).

Of the treatments, the most commonly treated diseases were those related to rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (50%), followed by respiratory diseases, with 30% of the demand.

In the latter case, according to the data provided, the number of children and young people who sought thermal treatments for the various respiratory allergies, namely rhinitis, sinusitis and asthma, among others, increased.

According to João Pinto Barbosa, last year the association recorded a turnover of 13 million euros in consultations, thermal treatments and well-being practices, 0.5% more than in 2016.

These figures only reflect the activity in thermal spas and do not include the rest of the spa’s tourist services, such as hotels, catering, other tourist services and dermo-cosmetics, explained the person in charge.

“Overall, we estimate that the turnover of the ATP Hot Springs in 2017 was 22 million euros,” said João Pinto Barbosa.

As for the characterization of the users of these spaces, in terms of therapeutic thermalism, they are “mostly senior, over 65 years old”, but the segment with the greatest increase in demand is children and young people.

In relation to the clients of well-being programs, they are mostly younger, in the 45-55 age bracket, and 90% of the spa clients are Portuguese.

The spa employs about 2,000 people, estimating the secretary general of the ATP that indirect and induced employment is much higher.
