Theatro Circo in Braga receives Ólafur Arnalds, Mulatu Astatke and Anavitória

Theatro Circo in Braga will receive, in the first quarter of next year, names such as Ethiopian Mulatu Astatke, Icelandic Ólafur Arnalds, the duo Anavitória or the American Micah P. Hinson, announced today that room.

In 2018, Theatro Circo is expected to surpass 100 thousand spectators, as artistic director Paulo Brandão told Lusa, acknowledging that it is a difficult number to reach due to the room ratings.

“At Teatro The Circus there is always something new. We try to have a very intuitive programming, current and contemporary, to the taste of the public, but also that it is different from the national panorama,” said Paulo Brandão.

January begins with the New Year and Reis concert, on the 3rd, in which the Filarmonia Orchestra of Beiras will be accompanied by Cristina Branco, followed by the guitarist Son of the Mother, a day later.

During the first month of 2019, names such as the Portuguese Áurea, the so-called “pioneer of the Ethio Jazz”, Mulatu Astatke, or the Anavitória project of the Brazilian duo who are on tour to present “Tempo é Now”.

Asked about the occupation rate of the shows, Paulo Brandão pointed out that, in the area of music, “a lot never gets below 60, 70% and most of it runs out.”

For example, as far as the 2019 schedule is concerned, there are names whose tickets have already gone on sale and are close to being exhausted, such as Anavitória.

On February 1, Theatro Circo hosts Selma Uamusse in the main room and Micah P. Hinson in the small auditorium while the Mundo Cão performs on the 16th of that month.

Ólafur Arnalds plays in Braga on March 10, before climbing to the stages of the coliseums in Lisbon and Porto, while Frenchman Chassol will perform on April 12.

Paulo Brandão points out the pianist and composer Chassol, who has worked with Sebastian Tellier, Phoenix and Frank Ocean, as “one of those names that will grow immensely.”

For 2019, Brandão also emphasizes the realization of several stand-up shows, a genre “that is now resurfacing with a new one different from making humour”.
