Thousands of students shout in Lisbon “There is no planet B”

Thousands of students have been marching from Largo Camões to the Assembly of the Republic in Lisbon at 11 am to protest against climate change and criticize “There is no planet B”.

Wielding signs that read “The Earth has exhausted your patience and us too”, “Climatic justice already”, or “State of Emergency”, young people parade and shout slogans among which the most demanded is: “There is no Planet B “.

Among the various messages spread throughout the march are also posters with words in English such as “We are skipping our lessons to teach you one (we are missing classes to give you a [lesson].

At 11.45, the students arrived at the Assembly of the Republic where they are concentrated near the staircase in a noisy protest.

António Tonga, 25, one of the many students joining today said that the problem of climate change is becoming secondary “we have to look at climate change as an inescapable problem that will boycott the future of all, so we ask the help of politicians to solve a problem that should have been solved a long time ago. ”

“We can not have the future mortgaged, we have to save the planet,” he retorted.

Also Monica Vicente, 21, who came from Aveiro with friends to be present at the parade in defense of the climate, said that if it has to “change the way the planet is treated, this will only change if we change the capitalist system.”

The students gathered today in Largo de Camões, in Lisbon, where around 11:00 they began to march towards the Assembly of the Republic.

This world-wide student strike has as its motto “strike for a safe climate” and culminates a series of weekly demonstrations started last year by Sweden’s Greta Thunberg, 16, named for the Nobel Peace Prize.

In Portugal, protests are taking place in the morning in more than 20 cities.
