The joint debut of “Dia de Festa”, by Sofia Bost, “Ruby”, by Mariana Gaivão, and “Cães Que Ladram aos Pássaros”, by Leonor Teles, is an act of resistance and a celebration of Portuguese cinema in women.
Three months after the movie theaters closed due to the covid-19, it is important to have pleasure again, return to the collective and take away the fear.
The premiere of the three short films is scheduled for July 9th, when the commercial cinema exhibition should already be operating with some normality, albeit with security and social distance measures.
The session of the three short films will begin with “Dia de Festa”, Sofia Bost’s first film, which was at Critics’ Week at the Cannes film festival in 2019.
“Ruby”, by Mariana Gaivão, will hit theaters after being shown at several Portuguese and foreign festivals, including Curtas de Vila do Conde and the Rotterdam Festival.
The film portrays a youth in self-discovery, accompanying young Ruby in the days before her best friend, Millie, returned to England.
To these two films is added “Cães Que Ladram aos Pássaros”, by Leonor Teles, premiered in 2019 at the Venice Film Festival.
In the film Leonor Teles addresses the issues of gentrification and real estate speculation, in Porto, showing how this really affects a person’s life.
The short came out as part of the Cultura em Expansão project, from the Porto City Council, which gave the director a “carte blanche” to think about the city, the film being the result of an artistic residency in the city.
“Dia de Festa” and “Cães Que Ladram aos Pássaros” are produced by Uma Pedra no Sapato, by Filipa Reis and João Miller Guerra, while “Ruby” was produced by Primeira Idade, by Pedro Duarte.
