The Portuguese Tiago Ferreira was today runner-up in the world BTT marathon (XCM), in Sacaria, Turkey. The viseense, current European champion, was only beaten by Colombian Héctor Páez, who revalidated the world title.
The race, of 110 kilometers, began to be defined in the first of the three laps of the mountainous circuit of up and down, where a large part of the race took place, before returning to the town of Sacaria. In the first of the three laps, the selection began, in which Tiago Ferreira had a relevant role, imposing a strong pace. The first accelerations left a group of eleven cyclists ahead.
In a race disputed in the elimination record, the difficulties left the forefront reduced to five units in the second lap. In the third, some 40 kilometers from the end, Hèctor Páez hardened the pace. Only Tiago Ferreira and the Czech Martin Stosek resisted. But the Colombian insisted on a very high intensity.
Martin Stosek still tried to follow the world champion, but he was not successful and was eventually reached by Tiago Ferreira, who managed more carefully the individual capacities.
At the front, Héctor Páez went on a solitary “ride” of almost 40 kilometers to become two-time world champion. Tiago Ferreira was the runner-up, 2m20s. Martin Stosek closed the podium at 2´35.
José Dias was the other Portuguese runner present in the competition. His performance was compromised by a transmission malfunction, which forced him to stop to attempt repair. He still reached the end, in the 23rd position, 20m54s from the winner.
