Tiago Siopa wins Doc Alliance 2020 award

The award is an initiative of the Doc Alliance network, which brings together seven European documentary film festivals, including DocLisboa, and recognizes first works by directors from the European space, with the prize being awarded a value of five thousand euros for the development of the next project.

‘Fantasmas: Caminho longo para casa’, shown in 2019 at DocLisboa, was distinguished last November at the International Documentary Film Festival Ji.hlava, in the Czech Republic, where he won the prize dedicated to his first feature films.

The film is a family fable set in Benedita, in the municipality of Alcobaça, in which director Tiago Siopa takes the viewer to meet his family: mother, father, brother and in particular his grandparents, one of them personification of the ancient wisdom of magic and popular spells, which manages to put Tiago in contact with the ghost of his other grandmother, already deceased.

This is the first professional work by Tiago Siopa, who, in 2018, won the RTP Prize for the best project in the post-production phase on DocLisboa’s Arché program, which was equivalent to the acquisition by RTP of his exhibition rights.

The Doc Alliance network, designed to support independent European documentary cinema, integrates the festivals Doclisboa (Portugal), CPH: DOX (Denmark), Docs Against Gravity (Poland), FID Marseille (France), Jihlava IDFF (Czech Republic), DOK Leipzig (Germany) and Visions du Rèel (Switzerland).
