And my hands are never empty is the title of the new creation by Cristian Duarte in company. The title comes from the singer Maria Bethânia, reciting the Portuguese poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen: “Despite the ruins and death/ Where every illusion always ended/ The strength of my dreams is so strong/ That exaltation is reborn from everything/ And my hands are never empty”. And it is in this reality, still amidst wars, devastation and inequalities in different spheres and scales, that dance materialises. The nine artists that make up the cast delve into their physical-affective repertoires, bringing to the surface contact pieces of expressions, gestures, and movements to be collectively devoured.
Choreographer Cristian Duarte is a dance artist from São Paulo. He trained at the Nova Dança Studio and Company in São Paulo and at P.A.R.T.S. (Performing Arts, Research and Training Studios) in Brussels. His artistic practice has been marked by the creation of contexts for experimentation and training in dance, such as APT?, DESABA, LOTE and Z0NA. Since 2013, he has been a resident artist at Casa do Povo. He has been invited as a teacher and choreographer by important educational institutions such as DDSKS (Copenhagen), P.A.R.T.S. (Brussels) and DOCH/SKH (Stockholm). His creations have been recognised by the main dance awards in Brazil and presented internationally.
