Transtejo launches tender for the acquisition of ten electric ships

Transtejo will launch, on Tuesday, the tender for the acquisition of ten electric propulsion ships for river connections between the South Bank and Lisbon, in an investment of 57 million euros, the company announced today.

“Transtejo’s board of directors today approved the opening of the procedure for the supply of ten electric propulsion ships, by public tender with international advertising,” the company said in a statement.

According to the same note, the contest will be launched on Tuesday, through the publication of advertisements in the Diário da República and in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The delivery of the new “100% electric” vessels should take place “between 2022 and 2024”, he added.

“The alternative solution is linked to the national strategy for climate change and the objectives set for society’s decarbonisation goals”, he explained.

This is an investment in the order of 57 million euros, which, according to Transtejo, is due to the need to “complete the fleet renewal process”, which remains unchanged after “the extinction of the previous tender procedure”.

In February 2019, an ordinance was published in Diário da República authorizing the tender for the acquisition of ten ships for Transtejo, in an investment of 90 million euros that provided for the arrival of three vessels already in 2021.

However, this procedure was eventually annulled in December last year, due to the “non-demonstration by competitors of compliance with the required technical capacity requirements”, Secretary of State for Mobility, Eduardo Pinheiro told Jornal de Negócios.

Transtejo provides river connections between Seixal, Montijo, Cacilhas and Trafaria / Porto Brandão to Lisbon.
