Troubadour in sight: Ivandro’s long crossing finally fulfills its purpose

The author of unmissable songs such as “Lua”, “Moça” or “Como Tu” is now releasing his first solo studio album.

The journey was long, but it was accomplished. For Ivandro, the top spot is not unknown, even though his discography is spread across fragments that, to date, were distant in time from his authorial existence. Now, there is solid ground in sight, with Trovador leading a route increasingly defined by Joaquim Ivandro Paulo. Because slowly you get far, even when that horizon is not palpable. In this thirst, more than seeing is believing, we just need to listen.

“The journey is made up of ups and downs, both hate and love can turn into music, and that’s what life taught me to do. This is my life in melodies”, he confides to us about an album that, in truth, has been in the making since 2021. Starting with “Moça” and heading towards “Lua”, Trovador took shape without be done deliberately. It took time to emerge as an artistic body, also matured due to the experience that encounters with people like Bispo, Slow J, Gson, Mizzy Miles, Piruka, FRANKIEONTHEGUITAR, Bárbara Bandeira, Julinho KSD or Vitor Kley brought to it.

These crossovers came to provide many others, with greater figures such as António Zambujo, Marisa Liz, Slow J (once again) or M Huncho (an unavoidable name in contemporary British urban music), who are evident in an impressive range of musicians involved in this first album. And, more than the weight of the names themselves, there are the unrepeatable exchanges of impressions with a greater end in view. Because, again in the words of someone who, by default, knows better than anyone else how to talk about what they have in their hands, chakras were aligned, canvases of different colours were painted and we arrived where we least expected between words and melodies. “The songs are a dialogue between our souls, where I found a balance between hate and love. Now I know that this is life”, he summarizes in the few words that the whirlwind of feelings of seeing the finished work allows him.

From this perspective, finally presenting his debut album ends up being an achievement incomparable to those that led him, for example, to participate in the Festival da Canção in 2023, to be nominated, first, and then to win two awards at the PLAY Awards (as Best Male Artist and author of Song of the Year in 2022), or to be successively the most listened to national artist on digital platforms and radio. Gold and multiple Platinums illuminate the path you intend to follow, but in themselves, they can still lead to sunken treasure. That is why the Portuguese-Angolan singer and composer did not delude himself with his success, much less rush it. The true spirit of Trovador is, in fact, this: knowing that the winds are blowing in opposite directions, without, however, losing confidence in the trajectory that guides him along the great journey.

The very structure of this debut album, which resulted from years of work, reflects this constant unpredictability that life itself — and Ivandro in particular — imposes. There is despair in the calm, but also euphoria in the storm. Songs that take us from melancholic R&B to assertive drill, from desolate pop to invigorating Afro.

What remains is someone true to themselves from beginning to end, from departure to arrival, focused on where they wanted to go, without neglecting where they had to go. Tuned compass, calibrated coordinates and an immense belief in the journey you set out to undertake. Never alone: heroes are only made with allies. And he could not have had a more capable entourage. Only then would he get to where he always wanted — and wanted — to be. In this aspect, the merit is all yours. “Sometimes we only have one opportunity to tell the truth”, he confesses to us at the end of the last track on the album, the song of the same name from his first full-length album. And one opportunity was enough for him to voice his truth. There is no fiction in a Troubadour’s stories.
