Two Portuguese dancers will compete in the Lausanne Prix 2019

Portuguese dancers Joana Senra and António Ferreira will compete in the 47th edition of the Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland, an international ballet competition that starts on Sunday.

According to the online prize site, the jury selected a total of 80 dancers – 44 girls and 36 boys – from 363 candidates from 40 countries to participate in this 2019 edition.

Both Portuguese dancers are students of the Dance School of the National Conservatory (EDCN) in Lisbon, from where a third dancer, José Pedro Costa, was selected from among the ten candidates from Portugal.

EDCN source indicated that Jose Pedro Costa ended up giving up the contest for having suffered an injury.

Among the selected candidates there are also six Brazilian citizens: João Da Silva, Ballet Vórtice, Nathan Fernandes da Fonseca, Studio Arte Dança, Glayson Mendes, Ballet Marcia Sampaio, Vítor Oliveira Pires, Companhia de Danças Clássicas Jolles Salles , Thiago Victor Santana, from the Bolshoi Theater School, all in Brazil, and Gabriel Figueiredo from the John Cranko School in Germany.

This year’s jury will be composed of Carlos Acosta, president of the Carlos Acosta International Dance Foundation, vice-president, Iván Gil-Ortega, Julio Bocca, former principal dancer of the American Ballet Theater, and also professor Gillian Murphy , American Ballet Theater principal dancer Madeleine Onne, artistic director of the Finnish National Ballet, Garry Trinder, director of New Zealand School of Dance, Éric Vu-An, artistic director of Ballet Nice Méditerranée, Samuel Wuersten, director of the Holland Dance Festival, and Miyako Yoshida, art consultant at the National Ballet Company of Japan.

The Prix de Lausanne, one of the most important awards dedicated to dance, was created in 1973 and is managed by Foundation in Faveur de l’Art Chorégraphique.
