The UCCLA Literary Prize – New Talents, New Works in Portuguese Language has 431 applications from 22 countries

Applications for the fifth edition of the UCCLA Literary Prize – New Talents, New Works in Portuguese Language are closed, the number of works presented – among novel, novel, short story and poetry – totals 431, which qualifies the UCCLA Literary Prize as the broadest prize for literary revelation from all over the Portuguese speaking countries.

More than the quantity, the diversity of applications is highlighted. The works, in Portuguese, come from 22 countries, including, in addition to those that naturally come from Portuguese-speaking countries, applications from countries as far away as Australia, Canada or Japan. Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe said gift.

And if 50% of the candidates are young, of whom 31% are women, there are even senior candidates, one of whom is 98 years old, who sees in this award the possibility of revealing their talent as writers.

Until April 6, a pre-selection team, led by the poet and professor António Carlos Cortez, will select all significant works to be submitted to the jury. The winning work will be published by Guerra e Paz, Editores, in September, at the opening of the literary rentrée.

In a time of confinement and fears, the extraordinary openness and diversity of this award, the largest literary revelation contest in the entire Portuguese language space, is a testimony of courage and hope. A living proof of Literature.

This award is organized by UCCLA and has the support of the Lisbon City Council and the 800 years of the Portuguese Language Movement.
