ULisboa/CGD Scientific Awards distinguish retired IPS professor

Bill Williams, retired professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS), was recently awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2020 edition of the Universidade de Lisboa/Caixa Geral de Depósitos Scientific Awards.

The teacher, who has taught at the Barreiro School of Technology (ESTBarreiro/IPS) for about 20 years, has seen his work recognized in the category of Educational Sciences, an area in which he has been developing fruitful and varied activity, especially focused on Education in Engineering.

A chemist by training at the National University of Ireland, Bill Williams later specialized in the area of ​​Education, which took him to various parts of the world, including Portugal, having also directed distance courses in several African countries, under the aegis of the Organization Labor International.

PhD in Engineering and Management from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and an integrated member of the respective Center for Management Studies (CEG-IST), the professor has produced knowledge in two major areas of interest, Engineering and Educational Sciences, standing out for author of the book “Engineering Practice in a Global Context: Understanding the Technical and the Social” and also a founding member of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (SPEE).

As a science evangelist, Bill Williams is also associate editor of several leading publications worldwide, including the European Journal of Engineering Education (EJEE) and the Journal of Engineering Education, the most cited in the field of Engineering Education, having been the first researcher in Portuguese higher education to join the editorial committee of this journal, edited by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

The aforementioned Scientific Awards, instituted by the University of Lisbon in collaboration with Caixa Geral de Depósitos, aim to recognize scientific research activity and encourage the practice of publishing in international journals of recognized quality.
