Universal Declaration of Human Rights marked on Sunday in Lisbon

The Fraternitas Humana Association, together with the Lusófona University, the Lusitano Foundation and the Parish Council of Misericórdia, will hold a “vigil feast” on Sunday to mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

According to the president of the Humana Fraternitas Association, Meira da Cunha, this will take place from 4:00 pm in the Jardim de S. Pedro de Alcântara, in Lisbon, during which a brochure will be distributed with the text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and two poems by António Gedeão.

On Monday, schools of the Baixa-Chiado Association, in Lisbon, will also distribute copies of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in an initiative that also counts on the collaboration of the Portuguese League of Human Rights and the Foundation for Assistance, Development and Vocational Training (ADFP).

Meira da Cunha said that this initiative “aims to alert the need and urgency to stimulate the feelings and practice of fraternity in accordance with the Universal Declaration of the United Nations, for a balanced and intelligent relationship between human societies and nature.”

“70 years after the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the common ideal to be achieved by all peoples and all nations, it is important to insist on the appeal to reason and the conscience of human beings to assume the fundamental humanist duty to act some to others in the spirit of fraternity, a fundamental evolutionary condition for freedom, justice and peace, “he added.
