The Department of Physics of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) will promote a masterclass on Particle Physics on the 25th of March, Saturday. In this event, aimed at secondary school students, students will have the opportunity to “Be Scientists for a day…”.
This initiative, which takes place throughout the day at the Physics Department’s premises, offers secondary school students the possibility of carrying out various activities related to Particle Physics.
According to Filipe Veloso, the researcher responsible for organizing the event at the University of Coimbra (UC), enrolled students, along with their professors, will attend lectures on basic techniques for identifying elementary particles and data analysis, but will also have the opportunity to get your hands on particles by analyzing real data collected by detectors from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collaborations at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). The results are then associated with the various groups and discussed in a videoconference with the other groups visiting the other Portuguese and foreign universities participating in the event on that day.
«This is probably the initiative in which more Secondary School students visit the Department of Physics every year, thus promoting the image of the department, FCTUC, and UC», assures Filipe Veloso, adding that «they usually participate in these masterclasses around 150 students and teachers from various schools, discovering Particle Physics, interacting with professors, researchers, and university students, and contacting, in a remote conference, researchers from CERN and Fermilab, but also with other international universities where the masterclasses take place simultaneously”.
This is an event organized by the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP), in partnership with several Universities. For those interested, registrations must be made in advance by the teachers using this form.
