Vagos invests in the extension of free Wi-Fi network

Vagos will offer free wireless internet in five locations, “with the capacity to attract flows and tourist resources,” an investment of 77 thousand euros that will be reimbursed by community funds, said the mayor of the municipality.

Designated as “Be Connected to Vagos,” the project was approved by Turismo de Portugal as part of the Valorizar – Support Program for the Availability of Wi-Fi Networks. Community funding will be 50 thousand euros.

According to Silvério Regalado, the “Be Connected to Vagos” project will now be installed in five places strategically defined by its external visibility, “with the capacity to attract flows and tourist resources“: João Grave Municipal Library, Visconde de Valdemoro Palace, Quinta do Ega, Praia do Areão and Museological Space of Praia da Vagueira.

The project “is part of the strategy of the municipality of Vagos to integrate the network of smart cities and towns of Portugal,” said the mayor, adding that “it will enable both residents and tourists to visit the county and the region, enjoy better conditions regarding access to information content “.

The availability of the Internet by the Vagos City Council, through free access to Wi-Fi networks, began in January 2013 with the installation of Access Points in five municipal facilities, where there is a large concentration of people.

In 2016, several new generation Broadband Internet Access Points were also made available along two kilometres of coastline.

The “Be Connected to Vagos” was elaborated according to the guidelines of the Strategy for Tourism 2027 – Thinking the Future, Acting in the Present.

This national strategy recommends to tourist destinations “the availability of technological infrastructures that allow tourists to access information on the location of tourist attractions and interest, offer accommodation and catering, and quick access to content platforms, enabling the sharing of the its experience of visitation in the territory, positioning more and more Portugal as a Smart Destination “.
