Valença Hosts the “Tocatuna Valença” Tunas Festival
On May 9th and 10th, Valença will become the capital of academic spirit with the TOCATUNA VALENÇA festival, organised by TUNESCE (from ESCE – Escola Superior de Ciências Empresariais) and the City of Valença.
The event will feature the participation of five tunas from several Portuguese universities, plus a guest tuna, promising two days of music, tradition and interaction with the community.
A Program Full of Academic Emotions
Friday, May 9th | Serenade Night
The Municipal Garden will be the opening stage of the festival, hosting a ‘Serenade Night’ at 9:30 pm, with the special participation of the Tuna from the Valença Senior University (guest tuna) and the other groups in competition. The event promises to enchant the audience with traditional harmonies and the warmth of academic songs.
Saturday, May 10 | Passa-Calles and Tunas Festival
During the afternoon, the tunas will tour the Valença Fortress and the city centre in a “passa-calles” style, bringing joy and music to all who visit the city.
At 9:00 p.m., the grand Tunas Festival will begin in the Municipal Garden, where the tunas VEMTUNA, RAUSSTUNA, INCOGNITUNA and PHARTUNA will compete for prizes in various categories, evaluated by a specialised jury. The TUNESCE, the tuna organising the event, will also perform at the end.9
Both shows are open to the public and free of charge, reinforcing the event’s mission of uniting the academic community and the local population. The initiative celebrates not only traditional music, but also the integration of ESCE – an institution with over 700 students and 20 years of presence in Valença – into the city’s cultural identity.
Two days of magic, joy and great interaction between students, visitors and Valencians are expected, reinforcing this festival as an opportunity to project the city as a destination for culture and youth.
